Cameron baseball beats West Texas A&M 2-1 in 11 innings

LAWTON – It took 11 innings, but the Cameron Aggie baseball team took down West Texas A&M 2-1 in a low scoring game Friday evening. The win is CU's third in a row and moves them to 13-14 this year with a 7-9 Lone Star Conference mark.

Cameron pitchers have been lights out as of late, and that continued today against the Buffs. Codey Upton started for CU and pitched six solid innings, giving up seven hits and just one run while striking out four. Logan Fanning came in and gave the Ags three two hit innings and two strikeouts to bridge the gap from the seventh to the 10th inning. From there Deven Youngstedt continued to be dominant as he threw the final two innings and gave up only one hit to earn the win.

The two teams racked up 18 total hits, but left a total of 21 runners on base, which led to a low scoring contest through the first six innings. WT got on the board first on a solo home run by Trace Hansen in the seventh. Cameron responded with their first run of the game in the bottom of the eighth as Jonathan Reyes drove in Nate Hale on a sacrifice fly.

Neither team was able to get on the board in the ninth, which sent the game into extra innings. Youngstedt got a big double-play in the 10th inning to give CU a chance, but the Aggies went three up three down in their half of the 10th.

After giving up a hit to start the 11th, Youngstedt got back to work and got two straight ground ball outs and a punch-out to keep the game tied.

Dyce Applegate II singled to start out the Aggie half of the 11th and moved to third as Tyler Cook reached on an error by the WT shortstop. After Russ Colgan was intentionally walked, Matt Nilmeyer hit a groundball to the short stop, who threw it to second, but Nilmeyer beat out the throw to first and Applegate scored the winning run.

Nate Hale led the Aggies with two of their eight hits, while six others chipped in for the other six and Reyes and Nilmeyer added RBIs.

WT moves to 18-11 overall and 10-7 in league play with the loss.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow at McCord Field for a double-header with game one starting at 1 p.m.
