LAWTON – A six run third inning provided enough run support for West Texas A&M to get a 7-2 win over Cameron to split the home series on Sunday afternoon.
Cameron won the first two games in the series in low scoring battles, but it was WT outscoring CU 17 to 7 in the final two games.
After a scoreless first, West Texas A&M took advantage of an Aggie infield error and their runner on second scored on the play to go up 1-0. The Buffs attack continued into the third and punched in five hits to score six more runs to take a sizeable 7-0 advantage over the Aggies. All seven of the runs would be tacked onto CU starter
Javarias Banks with five of those runs being earned; he would go 2 2/3 innings.
Cameron worked their way into a run during the fifth with
Russ Colgan doubling to left field with one out,
Jonathan Reyes later singled with two outs to push Colgan home.
Cody Knight opened the sixth with a single to right field and
Matt Nilmeyer reached on an error by the WT shortstop to put runners on the corners with no outs.
Justin Winters managed to get a run home but grounded into a double play to end the CU threat with them trailing 7-2.
The Aggies would leave one stranded in the eighth and go down in order in the ninth to fall to 14-16 overall and 8-11 in the Lone Star Conference.
Banks (0-3) was charged for the loss;
Deven Youngstedt came out of the bullpen and went 6 1/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
Colgan and Reyes were the lone Aggie hitters with two hits; West Texas A&M outhit the Aggies by one with nine.
With the win over Cameron, West Texas A&M goes to 20-12 this season and 12-8 in league play.
Cameron will return to the field on Friday start a three game series with Angelo State at McCord Field.
