Cameron drops two at Texas A&M-Kingsville

KINGSVILLE, Texas – Texas A&M-Kingsville rallied back in the late innings in the nightcap to complete a doubleheader sweep of the Aggies in Kingsville on Friday.   The Javelinas took the opener 4-1 and 5-3 in game two, both were seven inning contests as both teams tried to beat incoming rain in Southern Texas.

The Javelinas got on the board first in game one, scoring a run on a pair of hits to go up 1-0 early. From there, both starting pitchers were on their game as they held the other's team scoreless through the next three innings before TAMUK would strike for another three more runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth to put them up 4-0.

Cameron got their first run of the ball game in the top of the sixth, as Nate Hale and Cody Knight led off the inning with back to back singles and then Steven Swingle drove in Hale on a groundout to second base. But that's all they would get in game one as the Javelinas took the game 4-1.

CU's starter, Codey Upton went five innings and gave up four runs on eight hits with six strikeouts as he moves to 3-1 on the season.

The Aggies totaled six hits from six different players in the game one loss, with Swingle having a hit and an RBI and Hale adding a hit and a run.

In the nightcap, Cameron struck first after in the top of the third after Jonathan Reyes beat out an infield single, Knight put runners on the corners with two outs, and Swingle hit a single to second for a RBI.  However, in the home half of the inning TAMUK opened with a single and double, following a ground out the Javelinas knocked a single up the middle to score two.

Following scoreless fourth, Cameron got things going with a Reyes single and Hale was hit by a pitch to put two on with one out.  After a wild pitch to move both runners up a bag, Knight singled down the right field line for a two RBI to put CU in front 3-2.

Despite the CU rally in the top half of the fifth, the Javelinas took advantage of a two out walk and a passed ball to put a runner in scoring position, which would be capitalized on with a RBI single to tie the game.  In the sixth, TAMUK hit three straight one-out singles to load the bases on CU starter Dirk Masters.  An infield fly would nearly get the Aggies out of the inning but a RBI single and walk would put the Javelinas out in front again.

In the seventh, CU managed to put two on and get the go-ahead run at the plate but they would ground out to end the game.

Masters (4-5) went 5 2/3 innings with five earned runs off of 12 hits; he would also strike out six.

Both Hale and Reyes had a pair of hits to make up half of CU's total for the game.

With the losses Cameron will fall to 14-21 overall and 8-15 in Lone Star Conference play, Texas A&M-Kingville will climb up to 22-15 and 16-8 in league action.

Due to rain in the Southern Texas region this weekend, both teams will turn around a complete the series with doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
