Cameron bats provide enough pop to lead to the 9-7 win over SWOSU

LAWTON – The Aggie baseball team got back on the winning track on Tuesday afternoon, out-hitting Southwestern Oklahoma State in a slugfest to win 9-7 in the non-conference contest. The Aggies are now 15-19 overall this season.

The Aggie offense got off to a quick start, scoring two runs in both the first and second innings. Brandon Wright drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to get it started, with Steven Swingle coming up with an RBI single two batters later. In the second, Nate Hale singled in a run on a single to center, and then came around to score later in the inning on an error.

SWOSU cut the lead in half in the top of the third, adding two runs of their own on a single down the line, but Cameron responded in the bottom of the inning and scored another run on a triple by Wright for his second RBI of the game to put the Ags up 5-2.

After a scoreless fourth for both teams, Cameron added more runs to their lead as they opened up the inning with four straight CU batter reaching base and one scoring before Tyler McKinzie drove in a run on a sacrifice fly for the first out of the inning. However, two runs would be all the Aggies would get in the inning as they took a 7-2 lead into the sixth inning.

The Bulldogs would not go down without a fight, as they brought three runs home in the top of the sixth on a three run homer to left to cut the CU lead to just two. Just two batters later SWOSU tied the game at seven with a two run homer to deep left center.

The long balls kept coming as Russ Colgan came in to pinch hit and drove a ball over the left center wall to five CU back the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Cameron added another in the bottom of the seventh as Hale doubled in a run to bring the Aggie lead to 9-7 after seven.

The Aggies threatened to put more runs on the board in the bottom of the eighth as Swingle doubled to lead off the inning and then moved to third on a wild pitch. He then tried to score on another wild pitch but got thrown out at the plate and after two more outs the CU threat was neutralized.

Cameron used six pitchers with Codey Upton starting the day and giving up two hits in two innings. Logan Fanning gave CU a strong two and one third inning of work while only giving up two hits and Jordan Dailey pitched two solid innings, giving up just two hits as well as he got the win for his second of the season. Dirk Masters finished up the contest, pitching the final two innings and giving up just one hit and striking out three for the save.

CU had 15 hits as a team as Hale led them with three hits and scored two runs and drove in two as well. Jonathan Reyes, Swingle, Cody Knight, and Wright each had two hits while Wright added a pair of RBI and Kinght scored two runs as well.

With the loss, SWOSU falls to 16-20 overall.

The Aggies will be on the road for their next contest as they head to Texas A&M-Kingsville for a four game series, April 10-12.
