CANYON, Texas – In game one of the last series of the season for Cameron, the Aggies got a quick 4-0 lead early, but could not hold off the West Texas A&M offense as CU fell 13-4 to the Buffs on the road. The loss drops CU to 19-27 overall and 11-22 in Lone Star Conference play.
After a scoreless first inning, the Aggies got off to a strong start, scoring four runs in the top of the second inning. Russ Colgan and Matt Nilmeyer led off the inning with back-to-back hits, and a third straight hit from Brandon Wright scored Colgan to put CU up 1-0. Nilmeyer then moved to third on a wild pitch and then scored on an error by WT's third baseman, and another error later on in the inning brought home Wright to put the Ags up 4-0.
The Buffs came right back in the bottom of the second and scored a run, and then scored a pair of runs in the third to cut the Cameron lead to just one. They then had a break out inning in the fourth as they scored seven runs on seven hits to take a 10-4 lead.
Both teams went scoreless in the fifth and sixth before two more runs crossed the plate for WT on a trio of hits in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Buffs scored another run in the eighth and then shut down CU in the final half inning to get the 13-4 victory.
Dirk Masters (5-7) got the loss as he gave up 10 runs, six earned, on 10 hits with just three strikeouts in three and two thirds innings pitched. Logan Fanning came out of the bullpen and three two and a third two hit shutout innings and Nolan Withrow followed with three runs given up in two innings of work.
Jonathan Reyes, Colgan, and Wright each had a pair of hits for CU and Wright had the only RBI.
The win improves WT to 32-16 on the year with a 21-12 in conference play.
Both Cameron and West Texas will close out their regular season with a double-header Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
