CANYON, Texas – Cameron gave up a three run seventh inning lead to fall 7-6 on Saturday at No. 21 West Texas A&M in their series opener.
Late run leads have been something that CU has had success with to date winning 19-of-21 after sixth inning. With the Saturday loss at WT, the Aggies will fall to 23-14 overall in 11-13 in Lone Star Conference play; the Buffs will go to 28-11 overall and 16-8 in the LSC.
Cameron outhit West Texas 14-to-13 and it is the third time this year they have lost when having more hits than their opponent.
The Aggies struck in the opening frame with
Nate Hale hitting a leadoff single and a sac bunt moved him to scoring position for
Bronson Pulgados to hit a RBI double to center to score Hale in from second.
West Texas came back in the third with a leadoff double and single, a ground ball out to short allowed the WT runner on third to score. Following a CU passed ball to move a runner to third, the Buffs singled to right field to go up 2-1 on the Aggies.
In the next frame CU opened with a double and single to put runners on the corners. WT walked
Tyler Cook to load the bases and the Aggies would ground into a double play. However, CU plated the tying run in and
Russ Colgan singled to right field to put the Aggies up a run.
WT would tie the game in the bottom half on the inning on a sac fly before
Cody Bower doubled in two runs with two outs in the fifth to give CU a 5-3 lead. One inning later, Hale moved the CU lead up to three with a Hale single through the right side to score
Cole Williams.
The Buffs cut the CU lead back down to one in the bottom half of the seventh where they picked up single up the middle with runners on second and third. In the eighth, WT tied the game with a single through the right side, and got a two out single up the middle in what would be the winning run.
Pulgados had a perfect day at the plate with four hits, Hale had three, and Colgan came up with a pair.
Dirk Masters went six innings in the no-decision with six strikeouts,
John Millan recorded an out but gave up two runs, and
Logan Fanning (4-1) went 1 2/3 with two runs.
Weather permitting the series will conclude on Sunday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
