LAWTON – The Cameron men's tennis team won their third in a row beating Newman 7-2 on Saturday at the Streich-Henry Family Tennis Complex.
Cameron's win was their final regular season match with a NCAA Division II opponent in the regular season, and are a near lock to host in the NCAA South Central Regional as the one or two seed in early May. Â Â
In Saturday's match, CU dropped its middle doubles grouping with
Felipe Oyarzun and
Mateo Velasco taking the top-spot 8-5, while
Dennis Merdan and
Joao Fazendeiro took the three-slot 8-3 to give CU a 2-1 lead into singles play.
Cameron fended off a pair of three-set matches in its top-two singles spots to move to 18-5 this season. Fazendeiro came back from a 6-3 set-one loss and won the next two, 6-2 and 6-0. Merdan picked up his tenth win in dual play in three-sets, 6-3, 1-6, and 6-4.Â
The win moved head coach
James Helvey closer to his 800th career win and now needs only five to reach this milestone number.
With the loss to the Aggies, Newman falls to 8-12 overall this season.
Cameron will close out their regular season with Seminole state on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.
