STEPHENVILLE, TX– Despite dropping the first game 6-1 to Tarleton State, Cameron battled back to take the second game 6-5 to split their doubleheader with the Texans on Saturday.
Â
The nightcap saw three ties as the Aggies trailed 5-2 entering the ninth inning. A pair of doubles scored three to tie the game for a final time at 5-5, and
Jonathan Reyes would score the go ahead run as
Tyler McKinzie reached on a fielder's choice.
Â
Logan Fanning took the bottom of the ninth inning on the mound to retire the side in order, striking out final two batters for his fourth save of the season while
Jackson Tetreault (2-1) picked up the win.
Â
Cameron out-hit the Texans 11 to 7, with five doubles. Reyes hit two doubles on the day and batted 3 for 5 at the plate across the doubleheader and brought in three runs.
Â
The split moves Cameron to 25-16 overall and 13-15 in the Lone Star Conference, tying them with Tarleton State in league standings for the fourth and final spot in the conference tournament.
Â
If the tie holds at the end of regular season play, Cameron now holds the tiebreaker by winning the season best of seven series.
Â
For game one, the Aggies' lone run resulted from a two out solo homerun by
Cole Williams in the top of the second. In the bottom, TSU would take the lead on a pair of RBI singles, and extend it to 5-1 in the fourth and tacked on one more in the fifth.
Â
In the seventh inning, Cameron had two on base with two outs but a strikeout retired the side for the 6-1 loss as Tarleton State out hit the Aggies nine to four.
Â
Dirk Masters (2-4) was charged with the loss after allowing seven hits and two earned runs out of TSU's six total.
Tyler Abrego and
Deven Youngstedt also made appearances.
Â
Treveor Renfro (7-3) pitched all seven innings for the TSU win, recording eight strikeouts, four walks and allowing four hits.
Â
Cameron will complete the series with Tarleton State Sunday at 1 p.m.
