Aggies sweep ENMU in high-scoring doubleheader

PORTALES, N.M. – Cameron closed out the regular season with an exciting twist, combining for 35 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Eastern New Mexico on Saturday. The Aggies won game one 14-6 and took the nightcap in a 21-20 high-scoring nail biter where CU recovered after coughing up a 13 run advantage to reclaim the lead late in the seventh inning.

Cameron recorded 31 hits on the doubleheader with seven doubles, one triple, and one home run total. Bronson Pulgados led at the plate with two doubles and a home run in a 5 for 9 night where he combined for eight RBI. Tyler McKinzie batted a perfect 3 for 3 in game two and recorded three doubles between both games.

The victory over the Greyhounds put the Aggies over the 30 win marker for the first time since 2011, and it was CU's first winning LSC campaign since that same year. Additionally, by taking the three game series, the Aggies have swept their first LSC series since Mar. 24-25, 2012 where they won four games at McCord Field over ENMU.

In game one, ENMU took a 5-2 lead by the bottom of the third, but the Aggies would plate six runs off six hits in the fifth. Cody Knight came off the bench to power a three run double to bring the Aggies' lead back, 8-5. Pulgados would put the game further out of reach in the sixth inning with a three run homer.

Jackson Tetreault (4-1) earned the win on the mound after appearing in the fourth inning to strike out five Greyhound batters while allowing no hits in 2.1 innings of work.

Game two took a wild turn as Cameron opened the contest with a 13-0 lead in an inning that saw five hits, seven wild pitches, and six walks. The Aggies cycled through their lineup and faced three ENMU pitchers in the opening frame.

However, the Greyhounds overtook the Aggies 19-15 by scoring in each inning highlighting with an eight run fourth inning. Cameron did not back down either to come within one run in the sixth inning and shut down ENMU's offense in the bottom before gaining back the lead 21-19 in the seventh.

In the bottom of the ninth, ENMU loaded the bases on three straight singles, and a hit by pitch allowed their first score since the fifth inning, but CU's Logan Fanning sat the next three batters down on strikeouts for the save and Aggies' 21-20 win, which was credited to Deven Youngstedt (2-1) on the mound.

Cameron (30-19, 18-17 LSC) will be making their first LSC Tournament appearance in four years and seventh overall as the No. 4 seed. The tournament which is double-elimination format starts on May 12 with the Aggies facing regular season champions and host Angelo State.

The Aggies and Rams have faced each other in the postseason twice in 2008 and 2010 with both teams taking a game. With Cameron outside of the top-8 in last week's regional poll and with the NCAA taking the top-6; the Aggies will need to win the LSC tournament for the automatic qualifier to advance.

Texas A&M-Kingsville and West Texas A&M are the other team teams in the tournament, CU will face one of the two in the winner's bracket or in an elimination game.
