Cameron tennis finishes fall at ITA Regional

LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron University tennis teams competed this past weekend at the ITA Oracle South Central Region Championships in their final taste of competition this fall.

The Aggies had some success this weekend in Odessa, Texas, even though they had to battle multiple rain delays on almost every day of the regional. Head coach Josh Cobble described the atmosphere as hectic as matches did not conclude on Thursday and Friday until after midnight.

In the men's singles draw, Przemyslaw Zielinski made it to the semi-final match before falling to Raul Stevens of UT Permian Basin, 6-7, 6-4, 10-8. Mateo Velasco and Julen Gutierrez both made it past the first two rounds, but Gutierrez fell to Stevens 6-3, 6-3, while Velasco was defeated by Midwestern State's Josh Sundaram, 6-4, 7-6. Julien Aubry-Damon and Stefan Svicevic also competed, but both fell in their opening round matches.

On the women's side of things, Zhenia Shviadok made it all the way to the women's singles final after defeating multiple regional foes in the first five rounds. She went up against Metro State's Tabitha Porter in the final and lost 6-3, 4-6, 10-2. Additionally for the Aggie women, Sarah Frendo made it two rounds in before falling to St. Mary's Ally Maciel, while Sara Petric won her first round matchup before falling to STMU's Tyra Timm. Mathilde Thibaudat, Rebeka Velasova, and Melany Opolz all lost during the first round of play.

Thibaudat and Opolz competed in the women's singles consolation bracket, where Thibaudat won four matches and Opolz won three before the wet conditions canceled the rest of the consolation bracket.

In doubles play, Frendo and Thibaudat made it two rounds in before falling to an MSU's Mandy Coffman and Bianca Duff, who went on to win the regional, 8-6, while Petric and Opolz won their first round match but fell in the second round to their MSU opponent 8-1. Additionally, Shviadok and Velasova fell in their first round match 9-8.

On the men's side, Gutierrez and Svicevic fell in the first round of doubles play 8-4, while Zielinski and Aubrey-Damon fell to MSU's Norrie and Nolan McGaig 8-7 in the opening round.

The Aggie men will open up their spring season on February 1 against Tyler Junior College, while the Cameron women's tennis team will start their spring on February 21 with a match against Central Oklahoma.
