CANYON, Texas – The Cameron University team opened up the West Texas A&M Lady Buff Invite with three wins, as they won a close one 2-1 against Washburn, and then exploded for 19-7 and 11-2 wins over Missouri Southern and Chadron State. The Aggies, who are now 8-3, combined for seven homeruns on the day.
Washburn scored first in game one, as Megan Stedman tripled with one out in the bottom of the third and then scored one batter later on a fielder's choice. Cameron evened the game up in the top of the fifth, thanks to back-to-back triples from
Brenna Busby and
Bethany Hines to lead off the inning.
Cameron added another run in the top of the seventh as
Callie Busby hit her first homer of the season, a solo shot to left field. Hines then finished the Ichabods off in the bottom of the inning to secure the 2-1 win.
The Aggies offense exploded in game two vs. Missouri Southern, scoring 19 runs on 18 hits through five innings of play.
It all started in the first inning as
Paige Daino drove in Hines, B. Busby singled to drive in her sister. An
Abbey Warren walk brought in Daino, and CU's fourth run of the inning was scored after
Annie Combs got hit by a pitch.
Breezy McComas added two more to the scoreboard in the top of the second, making it 6-0. One inning later, the Aggie bats went off, striking for seven runs, with three coming on a homer from Daino and two coming on B Busby's first homer of her career.
After MSSU put up their first three runs of the game in the bottom of the third, Cameron added two more runs in the fourth and four in the fifth. The fourth was highlighted by a two run double by Daino, while the fifth was fueled by B. Busby's second homer of the game,
Tori Smith's first homer as an Aggie, and C. Busby driving in two runs on a double of her own.
CU opened up the game against Chadron State with two runs in both the first and second innings. McComas had a RBI single in the first and both
Kaylyn Smith and Hines had RBI in the second. CSC responded with a run in the bottom of the second to make it 4-1.
After a scoreless third inning, both teams scored a run in the fourth. Hines drove in her second run of the game four CU's fifth run, while an RBI single from the Eagles in the bottom of the inning made it 5-2.
In the top of the fifth, Cameron added three more runs via B. Busby's third homer of the day, a three RBI round-tripper to left center. K. Smith then got her second RBI of the game with a single to right that scored A. Warren.
Cameron finished off the Eagles in the sixth as Daino drove in Hines on a sacrifice fly and McComas drove in C. Busby on a single to go up 11-2.
Alyssa Osterdock came in to get the last three outs and secure the run-rule victory.
The Busby sisters combined for 10 hits, 10 runs scored, 10 RBI, and 4 homeruns, while Daino chipped in seven RBI on her own.
In the circle, Hines recorded two wins, while giving up 10 hits, three earned runs and striking out eight. She also went 7-11 at the plate with 3 RBI and three runs scored. Osterdock pitched all five innings in game two and got the win.
Cameron will continue play in Canyon tomorrow, as they take on Fort Hays State at 10 a.m. and then Fort Lewis at 12 p.m.
