CANYON, Texas – The Aggie softball team concluded the West Texas A&M Lady Buff Invitational with wins over Fort Hays State and Fort Lewis on Saturday, giving them a 5-0 record for the weekend and a 10-3 record on the season.
In game one, both teams went scoreless in the first and second innings, before CU put two runs on the board in the top of the third. The first run came on an RBI single from
Sydnee Stolz that drove in
Abbey Warren, who led off the inning with a single. Stolz then scored three batters later on a groundout by
Bethany Hines.
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Aggies struck for two more runs to make it 4-0.
Kaylyn Smith doubled in both
Annie Combs and
Tori Smith who doubled and walked to start the inning. The Tigers (1-2) scored their first and only run in the bottom of the fifth via an RBI single.
Cameron capped off the game with a run in the sixth thanks to a T. Smith RBI single. From there Hines took over and finished off FHSU in the sixth and seventh to secure the 5-1 win.
Hines moved to 6-2 on the season with her win in game one. She went all seven innings, gave up one run on seven hits, and struck out two Tiger Batters.
Fort Lewis (1-3) struck first in the second game of the day, scoring a run on an RBI single to take an early 1-0 lead in the first. Cameron matched that with a run in the bottom of the second as Warren reached on a one triple and then scored on a wild pitch. Two batters later, K. Smith broke the tie with a three run inside the park homerun, making it 4-1 in favor of the Ags.
The Aggies put up another run in the fourth inning as
Callie Busby drove in a
Kaytlyn Kizarr on a groundout to the shortstop. The Skyhawks responded with two runs in their half of the fifth inning with back-to-back RBI extra base hits.
Cameron came up in the bottom of the fifth and put up six runs to end the game via a run-rule. The inning was capped by a pair of RBI doubles from C. Busby and
Paige Daino to give CU the 11-3 victory.
Alyssa Osterdock got the win in game two, going five innings, giving up seven hits, three runs, and striking out four to move to 4-1 on the season.
K. Smith recorded five RBI on the day while going 3-7, as C. Busby chipped in three RBI in game two.
The Aggies will begin Lone Star Conference play next weekend, Feb. 17-18, as they visit Texas Woman's for a three game series.
