Hines gets two wins in doubleheader sweep of Lions

COMMERCE, Texas – The Cameron University softball team completed the three game sweep of Texas A&M-Commerce with a doubleheader win on Saturday; CU won game one 9-1 in five innings, and then took game two, 9-5.

Cameron opened up game one with five runs in the first and second inning. They scored two on a double from Callie Busby in the top of the first and then three more in the second on a RBI fielder's choice, a RBI groundout, and a wild pitch.

After a scoreless third, each team added a run to the board with runs in their respective halves of the inning. Annie Combs stole home while Kaytlyn Kizarr was stuck in a pickle for CU's sixth run of the game. The Lions cut into the lead with a solo homer in the top of the fourth.

C. Busby added three more runs to the Aggies' line on a three run homer in the top of the fifth to put them up 9-1. Bethany Hines was able to retire TAMUC in order in the bottom of the inning to secure the run-rule win.

The catcher from Washington, Okla., C. Busby, was 2-3 with a run scored and five RBI to lead the Aggies in game one.

In the second game of the doubleheader, each team scored a run in the first inning, with CU's coming on a Breezy McComas sacrifice fly, while Commerce scored on a RBI fielder's choice. Cameron then struck for five runs in the top of the fifth, as Hines scored on a wild pitch for the first run of the inning and two batters later Paige Daino cleared the bases with a three RBI single. Daino then came around to score on a McComas RBI single that put CU up 6-1.

The Lions scored a pair of runs in both the third and fourth innings to cut the Aggie lead to just one run, but after a scoreless fifth, the black and cold went back up by two, 7-5, on Combs' first homer of the season. CU added two more runs in the top of the seventh, before Hines finished the Lions off in the bottom of the inning to get the 9-5 victory.

After Alyssa Osterdock pitched the first 2.2 innings, Hines came in and finished off the game for her second win of the day and her third win of the series, moving her to 14-2 on the season. She finished with nine strikeouts and just three earned runs on seven hits in the doubleheader.

Kaylyn Smith, Brenna Busby, and Combs each had two hits in game two, while Daino had three RBI and McComas had two.

The win moves CU to 18-5 overall this season and 8-1 in Lone Star Conference play, while the Lions are now 13-7 and 2-4 in league play.

Cameron will return home to McMahon Field for their next series as they host Tarleton State for three games, March 10-11.
