Hines breaks single season wins mark in DH sweep

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Bethany Hines broke the Cameron single season record for wins as she recorded two against Western New Mexico on Saturday; CU won 12-3 in game one and 2-1 in game two.

Cameron got off to a hot start in game one, scoring three runs in the first inning to take the early lead. All three runs came on yesterday's hero Brenna Busby's three run homer that scored Paige Daino and Breezy McComas.

The Mustangs responded with two runs of their own to cut the CU lead to just one.

That didn't last long though, as the Aggies exploded for six runs in the top of the third to go up 9-1. Kaytlyn Kizarr got the scoring started with a RBI single to bring in Abbey Warren. Kaylyn Smith then stole home for the second run of the inning and then Kizarr came into score as Daino reached on an error, giving CU a four run lead. B. Busby then added to her RBI total with two on a single to right before scoring on a caught stealing play to end the inning.

WNMU scored one in the bottom of the inning, but Cameron kept scoring, putting a run on the board in the fourth and two in the fifth. In the fourth K. Smith scored on an error, and then in the fifth Callie Busby drove in two on a single to center field.

Hines held Western NM to just one earned run on five hits to win her 23rd game of the season, tying the CU single season record.

B. Busby was 2-4 with three runs scored and five RBI, while K. Smith reached tallied three hits and two runs scored. Daino, McComas, and C. Busby each had two hits as well.

In game two, Daino led off the game with a solo homer to center, putting her alone in second place in the CU record books with 44 homers on her career.

The Aggies added another run in the second, this time coming on a Hines RBI groundout to go up 2-0.

WNMU would add a run in the fourth, but that is all Hines would allow as she got her second win of the day and her 24th on the season, breaking the Cameron single-season wins mark. She allowed just one earned run on six hits in seven innings of work.

CU was held to just two hits in the second game of the day, as Daino had the homerun for the first hit and Kizarr had the other one.

Cameron is now 32-15 overall this season and 20-6 in LSC play, while WNMU falls to 1-44 overall and 0-27 in league games.

The Aggies will return home for their final series of the regular season, hosting No. 1 Angelo State for a three game showdown in Lawton, Okla.
