LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron University softball team lost in a doubleheader to the top-ranked Angelo State Rambelles on Friday afternoon, falling in game one 6-5 and game two 10-3.
To start the afternoon, the Cameron athletics Department honored their seniors as the three game showdown with ASU is the final series of the regular season.
Jessie Ingrum,
Paige Daino, and
Breezy McComas were all recognized for their four years of wearing the black and gold. Assistant coach Dylan Bryant was also honored as this was his last home series after spending four seasons working for the softball program.
In game one of the doubleheader, two of the top pitchers in the Lone Star Conference were dealing through the first three innings. CU's
Bethany Hines got in trouble early on in the first inning with two straight walks, but worked out of a jam to keep the game scoreless. Player of the Year candidate, Brandy Marlett, had a no-hitter going through the first three innings with four punch outs.
The scoring started in the top of the third, with ASU plating a run on a RBI single. CU responded in the bottom of the fourth with two runs of their own. The first run came on a solo homer by
Brenna Busby, her 11th of the season. The Ags took the lead on an error by the Rambelle left fielder.
After a scoreless fifth, Cameron added to their lead with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Kaylyn Smith drove in the first run of the inning as she placed a hit through the left side to drive in McComas.
Abbey Warren then scored on a wild pitch a few batters later to extend CU's lead to 4-1 heading into the seventh.
Unfortunately for the Aggies, Angelo State struck for five runs in the top of the seventh to take back the lead. Down by two, Cameron threatened in the bottom of the inning as B. Busby drove in another run on a single to left, but Marlett would strike out Warren to end the game 6-5.
Hines (24-7) got the loss, giving up four earned runs on six hits, while walking seven and striking out five ASU hitters. Marlett added another win to her now 26-3 record, giving up three earned on six hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks.
In the second game, Angelo looked like they were going to carry over their momentum from the seventh inning of the previous game as they scored four runs on four extra base hits to take the early lead.
The Aggies cut into that lead with a run in both the third and fourth innings as Daino drove in a run in the third and McComas had an RBI single in the fourth.
After both teams scored a run in the fifth, making it 5-3, the Rambelles put up their second five run inning of the day as they went up 10-3. Morgan Hill came in before the five run inning and finished off the Aggies in the final 2.1 innings to get her sixth save of the season.
Kennedy Urbany, the LSC leader in ERA, got her 18th win of the season, while
Alyssa Osterdock received the loss, moving to 8-10 on the season.
The Busby sitters led CU at the plate on Friday, with B. Busby going 4-7 with the solo homer in game one, while
Callie Busby was 3-7 with two runs scored and an RBI.
The two loses move Cameron to 32-17 overall and 20-8 in LSC play; the two wins helped ASU clinch the LSC regular season title, improving their record to 51-4 overall and 26-3 in league play.
The two teams will close out the regular season with game three of the series on Saturday, staring at 1 p.m., weather permitting.
