WICHITA, Kan. – Freshman
Maighan Hedge led the Aggie women's basketball team with 27 points in her collegiate debut, as CU took down Newman on Friday night 80-74.
The first year player from Melbourne, Australia, went 10-12 from the field and 5-6 from three-point range to pace a Cameron team that shot 51 percent from the floor and 43 percent from downtime.
Natalie Halbleib returned after missing all of last season with a 14 point, 10 rebound double-double, while
Parfitt McNair added 13 points,
Ava Battese had eight, and
McKenna Spikes and
Chelsea Heidebrecht had six points each in their CU debut.
Cameron started strong, outscoring the Jets 25-9 in the first quarter. Newman came back and got to within seven with a strong second half. In the second half, the home team went off to score 29 points, while CU had just 16 in the quarter. The Black and Gold responded with a strong fourth quarter to come back and knock down their free throws late secure the win.
Bria DeGrate led the Jets with 18 points, while Dede Johnson added 12 points. The team as a whole shot just 35.6 percent from the field and went 8-23 from three-point range in the loss.
The Aggies will face off against Oklahoma Christian, who beat MSU Texas 76-75 on Friday night, Saturday at 2 p.m.
