LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron University tennis teams swept their home openers over Colorado State-Pueblo on Friday, as the Aggie women won 9-0, and the CU men won 7-2.
On the women's side, the Black and Gold started out with a 3-0 lead after sweeping the doubles matches.
Zhenia Shviadok and
Mathilde Thibaudat won 8-2 in the No. 1 match, while
Sarah Frendo and
Sara Petric won 8-4 in the two spot and
Melany Opolz and
Rebeka Velasova won 8-2 as well.
The Aggies kept that success going into the single matches, as they swept all six of those. Shviadok won 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 1 match, while Velasova dominated her opponent with a 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 5 match. None of the six CU players allowed their opponent to win more than four games in a set.
Cameron's men started out just like the women, winning all three doubles matches.
Mateo Velasco and
Przemyslaw Zielinski won convincingly in the top singles position, 8-0, while
Vinicius Santos and
Julen Gutierrez won 8-4 in the No. 2 spot and
Luke Howard and
Stefan Svicevic won their match 8-6.
In singles, Zielinski, Gutierrez, and Santos all scored convincing two set wins in their matches, while Velasco won by retirement in the fourth spot. The Aggies lost in the five and six matches, but they had already secured the 7-2 win.
Both teams will be back on their home court Saturday as they host Southwest Baptist for a pair of matches set to begin at noon.
