Box Score 2 WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Red River Showdown hit the Midwestern State Tennis Complex on Wednesday and the Aggie tennis teams were unable to escape with a win, as the CU men fell 6-3 and the Cameron women fell 7-2 to the ranked Mustangs.
The No. 47 ranked Aggie men were the first to take the court, as first serve against the No. 18 Mustangs began at 11 a.m. CU started the match down 2-1, falling in both the No. 1 and 3 spots. Their lone win came at No. 2 as the No. 36 pairing of
Julen Gutierrez and
Stefan Svicevic took down their MSU opponent 8-6.
In singles, Cameron fell behind 4-1 with loses at No. 4 and 6. However,
Vinicius Santos got the Aggies back in it with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2. The Mustangs then secured the win with a win at No. 5, despite Gutierrez winning at No. 3, taking the tie break 11-9. Additionally, No. 27
Przemyslaw Zielinski fell to No. 15 Vasudev Vijayaraman 7-6, 7-6 at No. 1 to close out the match.
The No. 18 CU women started their match against No. 15 MSU at 3 p.m. and trailed 3-0 after doubles play. The No. 18 ranked pairing of
Zhenia Shviadok and
Mathilde Thibaudat fell to the No. 12 duo of Maddy Coffman and Ashley Ramirez 8-6 at No. 1, while
Sarah Frendo and
Sara Petric also lost 8-6 at No. 2.
Cameron earned the first singles point as Thibaudat won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2, however, CU lost at No. 6 and 3 in two sets to fall behind 5-1 as MSU secured the win. Petric earned the Aggies' second point with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 win at No. 5, while No. 23 Shviadok battled in a three set match against No. 12 Coffman, falling in the third set 10-5. The Mustangs recorded their seventh point at No. 4 as
Melany Opolz fell 6-1, 7-6.
The Aggies will have to regroup quickly as they host Newman for a pair of matches on Tuesday, April 12, with first serve scheduled for 1 p.m. They will then host UT Permian Basin on Saturday, April 14, and then the CU women will take on Tarleton State in a make-up match on Sunday, April 15 to wrap up the regular season.
