Box Score 2 LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron University tennis teams battled the wind and UT Permian Basin on Saturday afternoon, as the No. 18 Aggie women took down UTPB 9-0 and the No. 47 CU men won 8-1.
On a day when Cameron honored it's two seniors,
Mathilde Thibaudat and
Mateo Velasco, they also faced an LSC opponent, sub-60 degree temperatures, and wind gusts up to 40 mph.
The Aggie women started their match up 3-0 as they won each of the doubles matches by at least five games. CU's ranked pairing of Thibaudat and
Zhenia Shviadok set the tone for the match, winning 8-2 at No. 1, while
Sarah Frendo and
Sara Petric also won 8-2.
In singles, Cameron continued their dominant play, winning each of the first four matches in two sets. Shviadok and Thibaudat both won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 and 2, while Frendo took down her opponent 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3. At No. 4,
Melany Opolz won 6-0, 6-4, as Petric and
Rebeka Velasova both won by retirement.
Cameron is now 12-6 overall and 3-2 in Lone Star Conference matches.
In the CU men's match,
Przemyslaw Zielinski and
Vinicius Santos won convingly at No. 1, 8-1, while the 36 ranked pairing of
Stefan Svicevic and
Julen Gutierrez won 8-4 at No. 2. Velasco and
Julien Aubry-Damon secured CU's thrird point with an 8-3 win at No. 3.
The Black and Gold won all but one of their singles matches against the Falcons. The big win came at No. 1 where the 27 ranked Zielinski took down No. 7 Raul Stevens 6-4, 6-0. As for the rest of the Aggies, Santos won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2, Gutierrez won in three sets at No. 3, as well as Aubry-Damon at No. 4.
Luke Howard won by retirement in the fifth spot for CU's eighth point, while
Blake Graham had the only loss at No. 6.
With the win, Cameron improves to 7-10 overall and 2-1 in league play.
Cameron's women will wrap up league play on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Tarleton State, while both teams will close out the regular season on Tuesday, April 17, with a pair of matches against Newman. Â
