Cameron closes out regular season with wins against Newman

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron women's and men's tennis teams wrapped up their regular season on Tuesday with a pair of wins against Newman; the CU women won 9-0 and the Aggie men won 7-2.

In the women's match, No. 19 Cameron dominated from the opposition from the start. CU's went 3-0 in doubles as Rebeka Velasova and Melany Opolz won 8-2 at No. 3, the No. 18 pairing of Zhenia Shviadok and Mathilde Thibaudat won 8-5 at No. 1, and Sarah Frendo and Sara Petric beat their Jet counterpart 8-6 at No. 3.

Cameron continued their momentum into singles play, as all six of the CU players won in two sets or less. Shviadok, Thibaudat, Frendo, and Petric all had convincing wins in their respective matches, while Velasova played just one set, winning 8-2, and Opolz battled to win 6-4, 7-5 at No. 4.

The Aggies end the regular season with a 14-6 overall record.

Like the CU women, the Black and Gold men started out their match up 3-0 after doubles play. Przemyslaw Zielinski and Vinicius Santos won 8-2 at No. 1 and Mateo Velasco and Julien Aubry-Damon won 8-1 at No. 3. At the two doubles position, the 36 ranked pairing of Julen Gutierrez and Stefan Svicevic battled back from being down 7-8 to win 9-8.

In singles play, Zielinski, Santos, and Svicevic all three earned big wins at No. 1, 2, and 5, while Aubry-Damon earned a well fought 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 4. Additionally, Gutierrez retired in the third spot and Luke Howard lost in three sets at No. 6 after leading one set to nothing early.

With the win, Cameron moves to 8-10 on the season.

Both CU teams will next compete at the Lone Star Conference Championships at the HEB Tennis Center in Corpus Christi, Texas Friday and Saturday, April 20-21. The Aggie women face Western New Mexico in the opening round on Friday at 10 a.m., while the Cameron men face UT Permian Basin in the men's semifinal at 2 p.m. on Friday.
