Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Balanced attack leads CU to win over Mustangs

LAWTON, Okla. – Natalie Halbleib, Parfitt McNair, and Maighan Hedge combined for 42 points as the Cameron women's basketball team took down rival MSU Texas 80-59 on Tuesday night.

In the first half, CU was able to take a two point lead into the second quarter. Offensively, they got off to a hot start, going on a 14-4 run to open the quarter. Halbleib had seven of CU's points in the frame, and finished with 15 on the night. Despite facing 6-4 center Hannah Reynolds and 6-0 forward Liz Cathcart, the Aggies won the battle on the glass 15-10 in the first frame with eight of those boards coming on the offensive end.

At the half, the Aggies led this edition of the Red River Showdown 39-25. The Aggies out-rebounded the Mustangs 26-23, and shot 45 percent from the floor in the first half, while holding Midwestern State to just 30 percent from the field.

Off the bench, Hedge provided a huge lift for the Aggies. Hedge dished off six first half assists on her way to totaling eight dimes on the day. She also poured in seven first half points and was a +14 for the half. The Melbourne, Australia native finished with 12 points and logged 30 minutes off the CU bench.

Cameron got off to a hot start again in the third quarter, opening up on a 14-9 run prompting a Mustang timeout at the five minute mark. The Aggies saw their lead swell to 22 points at the end of the quarter and never looked back.

For the game, the CU outrebounded the Mustangs 46-38, and shot 48 percent from the floor tonight. Despite committing more turnovers (23-17) and getting charged with more fouls (25-17) the Aggies arguably played their most complete game of the year being in control from start to finish.

CU saw three players get into double figures including McNair, who posted 15 points after dropping 17 points last Saturday. Lejha Smith was just one point away from a double-double for the Black and Gold, grabbing 11 boards to go along with her nine points.

The win improved CU to 6-9 overall and 3-4 in the Lone Star Conference. They will be on the road for their next three contests, including a trip to Texas Woman's on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 2 p.m.
