Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Hedge drops 26 in overtime loss to TWU

DENTON, Texas – Freshman Maighan Hedge scored 26 points as the Aggie women's basketball team was not able to outlast Texas Woman's on Saturday, falling 72-70 in overtime.

It was a slow start to the game for CU, as they did not get on the board until the 7:11 mark, but from there, they used a 9-0 run to go up by five seven minutes into the contest. The Pioneers responded by tying the score at 11 by the end of the first quarter.

After trading buckets to start the second, the Black and Gold went on a 7-2 stretch capped by a Lejha Smith layup at the 3:06 mark to build up a 21-16 lead. A trio of TWO free throws and a second-chance layup evened the game up at 21 with just under a minute left in the half, but Cameron answered with a Hedge three to give them the slight three point edge at the break.

Hedge led all scorers with 10 points through the first 20 minutes of play. CU went just 9-26 from the field and 2-11 from three and the Pioneers went 6-29 from the floor and 1-9 from the perimeter. Texas Woman's got to the line 12 times and knocked down eight, while CU was 4-8 from the charity stripe in the first half.

The third quarter was back and forth, Cameron was able to stretch their lead to four multiple times, but TWU answered each time and 5-0 run to end the frame up 43-42. The Aggies opened the fourth quarter with a pair of three pointers to retake a five point lead, however TWU answered and tied the game at 48 with just under five to play. The home team then went up by six with just 1:52 left in the game, but Cameron came right back thanks to Parfitt McNair layup that got her team to within one with 59 ticks on the clock.

Hedge went to the line with 28 seconds left looking to tie the game and take a one point lead. She made the first, but missed the second, which was rebounded by Natalie Halbleib, who put it back up to give the Aggies a two point advantage. On the other end, London Archer drew a foul and knocked down both free throws to tie the game at 59. Both teams had possessions in the final seconds, but they each turned the ball over, forcing overtime.

In the extra frame, TWU took the early lead on four straight free throws, but Hedge responded with a three and a free throw to tie it up at 65 at the 2:16 mark. TWO traded a pair of free throws with a McKenna Spikes layup and the game was once again tied with 1:43 left in OT. Macy Wilkerson then hit a three to give the home team a 70-67 advantage, but Halbleib answered right back with a three of her own to even the score with 1:11 left on the clock. In the following TWU possession, Archer was called for an offensive foul, giving CU the extra possession. Halbleib then drew the foul, but missed both foul shots, keeping the game tied. The Pioneers gave the ball to Wilkerson in the final seconds and the freshman got a layup to fall to secure the two point victory.

Cameron finished the game with a 39.3 shooting percentage, going 10-27 from three, and hitting just 12 of their 24 free throw attempts; they were 6-13 in the fourth quarter and overtime. They turned the ball over just 11 times, but were outrebounded 48-41.

Hedge and Halbleib were the lone Aggies to reach double-figures for the game, as Hedge was just one point shy of matching a career high and Halbleib scored 14 of her 19 points in the second half and overtime. The two combined for eight of CU's 10 three pointers.

Wilkerson's 25 points led TWU, while Archer and Carissa Moody each chipped in 15. They shot 33 percent from the floor, while hitting 7-21 from the perimeter and 23-29 from the charity stripe.

Cameron and Texas Woman's are now tied in the LSC standings as they both sit at 6-10 overall and 3-5 in Lone Star Conference play.

The Aggies will continue their road stretch next Thursday, Jan. 24 as they visit Angelo State, which will be followed by a trip to Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday, Jan. 26.
