2020 softball schedule features six new LSC opponents

LAWTON, Okla. – Under new head coach Kayla Adams, the Cameron softball team will look to build on their remarkable postseason run last season as they face an expanded Lone Star Conference slate for the 2020 season.

Cameron returns all but three players from a team that went to the NCAA South Central Super Regional in 2019, but the most notable change comes on the bench, where Adams takes over after spending four years at the University of Science and Arts, where she helped guide the squad to a NAIA National Championship in 2018.

Adams and the Aggie team, which includes 2019 All-Americans Khmari Edwards and Brenna Busby, will face a new look schedule for 2020 as the Lone Star Conference has expanded and added six new softball programs to the fold, making it a 17-team league for the spring.

Before Lone Star Conference play kicks off in late February, the Aggies will compete in four weekend classics to prepare themselves for league play. The first of those is the Arkansas Tech Classic, which is held at the Scrap Yard facility in Conroe, Texas, Jan. 31-Feb. 2. CU will face off against Augustana (S.D.), Minnesota Duluth, Harding, Central Oklahoma and Pittsburg State over the three-day event.

Cameron's next classic will be part one of the Oklahoma Christian/UCO Invitational Feb. 7-9. They will travel back and forth between Edmond and Oklahoma City as they face off against Southwest Baptist, Colorado Christian, East Central, Missouri Southern State, and PSU for the second time. That classic will be followed by the Midwestern State Invitational in Wichita Falls, Texas, Feb. 14-15. Just a two-day event, CU will battle Southwestern Oklahoma State twice while also facing Northwestern Oklahoma State and Nebraska-Kearney.

The Aggies' final weekend slate before LSC play will be part two of the OC/UCO Invite, where they will play Fort Hays State, UCO again, UNK for the second time, PSU for the third time, and Rogers State. Like the first part of the invitational, Cameron will bounce back and forth between OKC and Edmond during the weekend of Feb. 21-23.

Due to the expansion of the conference, the format of Lone Star Conference play as changed from three-game series to single-day doubleheaders played on Fridays and Sundays for the first half of the season and then Thursdays and Saturdays for the second half.

Cameron's first LSC doubleheader will be against new conference opponent Lubbock Christian on Friday, Feb. 28 at McMahon Field. They will follow that up with a double-dip against Angelo State on Sunday, March 1 for their second set of home contests.

The Aggies will then be on the road for their next two LSC doubleheaders as they visit A&M-Commerce on March 6 and then Texas Woman's on March 8. CU returns home the next weekend for two-game slates against Tarleton on March 13 and MSU on March 15.

For their next road trip, CU will head west to face Eastern New Mexico for two games on March 20 and then West Texas A&M on March 22. They will then kick off a six-game home stretch with doubleheaders against UT Permian Basin on Thursday, March 26, and Western New Mexico on Friday, March 28. Cameron will then host their travel partner Oklahoma Christian on Tuesday, March 31, to close out the month.

The Black and Gold begins the final month of the regular season on April 2 at UT Tyler for a pair of games. They then have their only non-conference doubleheader against Northeastern State on April 6 in Tahlequah, Okla. Cameron's final homestand begins April 16 against St. Edwards and then Senior Day will take place on April 18 against St. Mary's. The team's final games of the regular season will be on the road at Texas A&M International on April 23 and then at Texas A&M-Kingsville on April 15.

While the regular season schedule format has changed, not much has changed with the postseason tournament. The Lone Star Conference tournament will be played April 30-May 2 at the No. 1 seed's home field. The top-10 teams based on conference record will qualify for postseason with the top-2 getting first round byes in the single-elimination bracket.
