WICHITA FALLS, Texas –
Brenna Busby led off both games of Friday's doubleheader with a homerun as the Cameron softball team split the day at MSU Texas with a 5-3 win in game one and a 4-3 loss in the second game.
Game one of the doubleheader started with a bang as Busby led off the top of the first with a homer down the left field line. The Aggies added another run in the fourth via a wild pitch.
Callie Busby was hit to lead off the inning and then after moving to second on a first wild pitch and to third on a sacrifice bunt, the CU catcher came in to score on the second wild pitch of the inning.
The Mustangs answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, on four hits. All three runs came on two-out hits, two on a Kelsey Eropkin single and the other on an infield single off the bat of Lauren Lindgren.
It did not take long for the Aggies to respond, as a two-out single from
Raley Long in the top of the fifth brought in
Khmari Edwards, who singled earlier in the inning, to tie the game at three runs apiece.
After a scoreless sixth, Cameron broke the tie thanks to
Breley Webb's first career homerun. B. Busby singled to open the inning and then a batter later, the CU freshman blasted a ball over the right field fence to give her team a 5-3 lead.
Bethany Hines, who came in to pitch in the fifth inning, got a pair of strikeouts in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win. The junior gave up just two hits and struck out four in her three innings of work to earn her third win of the season and 42nd of her career. Hines came in to relieve Webb, who gave up the three earned runs on six hits and three walks; the freshman also had six strikeouts during her four innings in the circle. The duo Âhelped CU strand 10 MSU runners on base.
B. Busby opened game two the same way she did the first, a solo homer to lead off the contest and put the Aggies up 1-0 early.
The Mustangs answered quickly, scoring three runs, two of which were on a Lindgren homer, in the bottom of the opening frame.
Cameron got to within one in the top of the third, as Edwards, who doubled earlier in the inning, came in to score on an
Abbey Warren single up the middle.
MSU added one more run in the bottom of the sixth on a blooper to right center and had the bases loaded with only one out. That is when head coach
Dennis Furr went to the bullpen and brought in
Rylee Willmon, who struck out the next two batters to get out of trouble.
CU threatened in the top of the seventh, as Edwards singled to lead off the inning and then a batter later, C. Busby singled to put a pair on for Warren. Warren went down looking, leaving it up to Long to keep the Aggies alive. The junior delivered with a base hit to center to bring in Edwards and cut the deficit to 4-3.
Carly Johnson came up looking to add one more, but she went down looking as well to end the game.
Hines got the start in the second game of the doubleheader, giving up two earned runs on seven hits and six strikeouts in her third loss of the season. Willmon face the two batters in the sixth with the two punchouts.
MSU got a solid outing from Abbie Lancaster, who gave up three earned on eight hits and five walks to go along with 8 K's. She stranded 10 Aggies on base and her final five strikeouts were on called third strikes.
On the day, B. Busby, Long, and Edwards were all 3-7, with Edwards and Busby accounting for six of CU's eight runs scored.
Cameron moves to 10-5 on the season and 2-3 in league play while MSU is now 8-6 overall and 1-4 against Lone Star Conference opponents.
The two teams will wrap up the three game series on Saturday with a game scheduled for 7 p.m. at Mustang Park in Wichita Falls.
