CU falls in rain-shortened series finale

LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron University baseball team came into Sunday looking for the series win against UT Permian Basin, but ended up splitting the four game-set, falling 3-0 in the rain-shortened finale.

Cameron and UTPB tried to get all nine innings in before the rain came into Lawton on Sunday afternoon, but in about the fourth inning, it started to come down and get heavier as the game went along. After playing a full six innings, the coaches and umpires decided that the conditions were unplayable and called the game with UTPB leading 3-0.

Dillon Turney (0-2) got the call to start the game on the mound, but struggled with location in the top of the first, giving up two runs on just one hit and three free bases. He was unable to get out of the frame, turning it over to Travis Walters to record the final out.

Walters pitched well for his first appearance of the spring, going 4.1 innings while giving up one run (unearned) on five hits and two walks. He also had two strikeouts before handing the ball over to Cole Pretorius, who threw a hitless sixth inning.

The Aggie offense was held in check for the second straight game, as UTPB starter Tanner Rhodes gave up just two hits and walked two to go along with 6 K's in his six innings pitched.

Cameron's two hits came in the bottom of the second, as Pierce Khan and Jaylan Prince hit back-to-back singles to put two on with only one out in the inning. However, Rhodes got the next two batters to go down looking to end the threat.

The Falcons third run came in the third as Andrew Donovan reached on an error, allowing Tyler Vlasek to come in to score on the play.

After splitting the four game series against UT Permian Basin, Cameron now owns a record of 9-11 on the season. They will face one more test before the official start of Lone Star Conference play when they visit West Texas A&M next weekend, March  15-17.
