CANYON, Texas – The Cameron baseball team was held in check by the reigning Lone Star Conference Pitcher of the Week Joe Corbett, recording just three hits in Friday's 12-2 loss to No. 6 West Texas A&M.
The top team in the conference gave their ace Corbett an early 4-0 lead with a pair of runs in both the first and second innings.
Cameron got on the board in the top of the third, thanks to a two RBI double from
Dillon Turney.
Jaylan Prince, who reached on his second hit of the day, and
Hayden Jaco came in to score on the extra-base hit.
West Texas then exploded for seven runs on six hits and an error in the bottom of the fourth to take an 11-2 lead. The Buffs opened the frame up with three straight RBI hits, the third being a two-run homer by Kyle Kaufman. They then added two more on a two-out single by Justice Nakagawa.
After scoreless fifth and sixth innings, Tag Baxter singled up the middle to drive in the Buffs' 12th run and end the game due to the 10-run rule.
Corbett held the Aggies to just three hits in seven innings, striking out 12 and walking just one to improve to 5-0 on the season.
Prince had two of CU's hits, while Turney had the other and drove in two.
Gaige Vines received the loss, giving up eight earned runs on seven hits and five walks. He struck out three in three innings of work, while
Drew Henderson and
Michael Womack combined for the final 3.1 innings on the mound.
Cameron is now 9-13 on the season while WT improves to 18-3.
The two teams will play games two and three of the series on Saturday in doubleheader format beginning at 2 p.m.
