CANYON, Texas – The Aggie bats could not get a whole lot going on Saturday as the Cameron baseball team lost a doubleheader at No. 6 West Texas A&M on Saturday, 7-3 and 6-0.
In game one, the Buffs scored seven unanswered to open the contest. They scored one run in the first, tree in the second, one in the third, and two more in the fourth to lead the Aggies 7-0 after four innings of play.
Cameron scored their first run of the game in the top of the fifth.
Colton Adams led off the inning with a single to right, and then move to second on a single from
Hayden Jaco. After
Cooper Edwards moved both runners on a sacrifice bunt,
Erik Ohman drove in Adams on a groundout to short to set the score at 7-1.
The Aggies rallied to make things interesting in the top of the seventh, but were only able to manage a pair of runs. Adams walked to lead things off and then advanced to second on a Jaco groundout and third on a passed ball.
Briton Schiewe brought Adams home two batters later on a groundout to first.
Jaylan Prince followed that up with a double down the right field line to drive in
Preston Allerheiligen, who pinch ran for Edwards, to give CU their third run of the game.
Cameron struck out 10 times in the contest, with WT's starter Darin Cook punching out seven in five innings, and two relievers combining for three in the final two frames.
Adams was 1-2 with two runs scored, while
Izrael Trevino, Prince, and Jaco had the other three hits.
Devin Castro received his second loss of the year, giving up five earned runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings on the mound.
Andrew Garza finished off the game with a scoreless 2.2 innings of work.
The Aggies held WT close throughout the first four innings of the second game. The Buffs scored one run in the bottom of the second, but
Brody Curry and
Sean Maher combined to strand eight WT runners on the base paths in the first four frames.
West Texas added two more runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to give them their six run advantage.
Cameron had just four base runners the whole game with three hits and just one walk. Adams,
Dillon Turney, and
Myles Miller had the hits, and Prince reached via a walk.
Curry, now 1-2 on the season, gave up just one run (unearned) on eight hits and two walks through three innings. Maher gave up four runs on five hits, while striking out four in just two innings on the mound, while
Chris Hansen struck out two and gave up one run in his inning of work.
The Aggies fall to 9-15 on the season, while WT improves to 20-3. The two teams will wrap up the four game series on Sunday with a single, nine-inning game beginning at 1 p.m.
