CU scores 18 runs in DH split Saturday

Portales, N.M. – After dropping game one of the series Friday night, the Aggie baseball team split their doubleheader against Eastern New Mexico on Saturday.

In game one of the day, The Aggies got the scoring started early when Pierce Khan came up with the bases loaded and knocked in Izrael Trevino on an up the middle RBI Single. The Aggies were not done in the first frame, Jaylan Prince earned a productive out driving home Hayden Jaco by way of the sac fly. CU tacked on another run when Colton Adams reached on a fielding error by the Greyhound shortstop that allowed Tyler Wood to score. Khan came across the plate via a wild pitch from the Eastern New Mexico hurler, Joel Torres.

Devin Castro enjoyed a 4-0 lead before he even stepped on the bump. Castro would cruse in his first two innings, before getting himself into a bases-loaded jam by allowing his first hit of the day, and hitting a pair of Greyhound batters. He would get out of the jam unharmed, keeping the Aggies 4-0 lead intact. Castro would run into trouble again in the fourth, and this time, could not get out of it unscathed. The RBI single off the bat of Miles Hilton was all the Greyhounds could muster, leaving the bases loaded. Castro gave way to Gaige Vines two outs into the fifth inning. He ended with a line of 4.2 innings pitched, four hits allowed, and two runs allowed.

In the fourth inning, Adams reached on a walk and stole his way to third before Jordan Harrison-Dudley earned a free pass of his own. Briton Schiewe plated Adams on an RBI bunt single.

The Aggies pitching staff ran into some trouble again in the sixth inning when Gaige Vines allowed an RBI Single that cut the CU lead in half. The Greyhounds threatened again in the seventh inning, getting two on with no outs. The Greyhounds grabbed a run by way of a fielding error charged to Vines. That is when the Aggies called on Jaco to pitch; the primary CU catcher immediately issued a free pass to load the bases. Jaco then walked in the tying run and later gave up a walk off sac fly.

In game two of the doubleheader, the Aggies tossed Drew Henderson who pitched five innings and allowed five runs on eight hits.

The scoring started for the Aggies in the top of the Third when Trevino scored on a passed ball, followed by a Prince two RBI single that plated Khan and Wood. Harrison-Dudley singled around Prince to end the third.

In the top of the fifth, Adams plated the Aggies fifth and sixth run of the day on a two RBI triple.

Despite the six run offensive outburst by the Aggies, the Greyhounds matched them run for run. In the bottom of the fifth did the Aggies one better when a sac fly gave Eastern New Mexico a 7-6 lead.

In the sixth inning, Jaco tripled home a pair of Aggie's by way of Trevino and Preston Allerheiligen to regain an 8-7 lead on the Greyhounds. Prince picked up another RBI when he earned an infield that plated Jaco. Adams singled to left field to score Wood. Khan scored on a wild pitch, to break the game open and hang up the fifth Black and Gold run of the sixth inning. Beau Williams doubled to left center to score Adams and Prince to add the sixth and seventh runs of the sixth inning.

Andres Rodriguez came on the pitch the bottom half of the sixth for the Black and Gold. Rodriguez allowed three runs to score before giving way to Tyler Garcia with one out in the sixth and a three run lead. The Greyhounds would add two more runs in the sixth to pull within one heading into the final frame.

CU called on Chris Hansen to finish the game with a one run lead in the seventh and finish inning of game two of the doubleheader. Hansen worked a flawless 1-2-3 inning that saw three strikeouts from the redshirt-junior to close out the game and earn his first save of the year.

Up next for the Aggies, they wrap up the series against Eastern New Mexico on Sunday afternoon with first pitch slated for 2 p.m. in Portales. They will look to earn a split in the four game series with a win tomorrow.
