Cameron outlasts UTPB 7-6 in 17 innings

LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron baseball team outlasted UT Permian Basin 7-6 with a walk-off walk in the 17th inning on Friday night.

UT Permian Basin got their first runs of the game in the top of the first, scoring two runs on an error by the CU catcher. They then added three more in the top of the fifth to take a 5-0 lead.

Cameron added their first runs in the bottom of the frame, as Hayden Jaco and Jaylan Prince came in to score on a Pierce Khan single. Dillon Turney singled to load bases in the next at bat and then Jordan Harrison-Dudley walked to drive in the third run of the inning, cutting the deficit to just two runs.

The two teams went scoreless in the next three innings, and after Sean Maher pitched a clean top of the ninth, the Aggies had one more chance in the bottom half of the frame. Jaco led off the inning with a single to left, followed by a double to right center by Tyler Wood, moving Jaco's pinch runner to third with no outs. Khan then cut the UTPB lead to one with a sacrifice fly to left field, and designated hitter Dillon Turney followed that up with a single to right that brought pinch runner Briton Scheiwe in from second base to tie the game.

Seven scoreless innings later, the Falcons took a 6-5 lead on an RBI single with one out in the top of the 17th.

Cameron would not go quietly in the bottom of the inning, as Trey Bigford got things started with a one-out double. In the next at bat, Myles Miller reached on an error by the UTPB second baseman. After Eric Ohman was hit by a pitch to load the bases, the Falcons went to the bullpen for a pitching change. Joshua Gonzales came in and on his first pitch, catcher Jonathan Bermudez let one get by him, allowing Bigford to score to tie the game. Cooper Edwards walked in the next at-bat, loading the base for Briton Schiewe, who drew a walk to win the game 7-6.

A total of 32 players were used in the 17-inning contest, there were 118 total at-bats, 587 pitches thrown and just 20 combined hits.

Wood, Turney, and Bigford all had two hits for CU, while Khan drove in three of CU's seven runs.

The Cameron pitching staff combined for 21 strikeouts, with Andres Rodriguez getting the win after pitching the bottom of the 17th.

With the win, Cameron improves to 8-10 on the season. They will play two more against the Falcons on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m.
