Ninth inning comeback falls short at ENMU

Portales, N.M. – The Cameron baseball team lost the opening game of a four game series at Eastern New Mexico on Friday night, falling 11-8.

Eastern New Mexico was the first on the board, scoring one run in the bottom of the first to take an early lead.

After a scoreless second, the Aggies answered with a three spot in their half of the third. Briton Schiewe scored on a double to left from Dillon Turney for the first run of the inning, and then Turney scored on an error to give CU a 2-1 lead. Cameron's three run of the inning came on a Pierce Khan single that scored Hayden Jaco.

The Greyhounds got one back in the bottom of the fourth, but Cameron responded with another run in the next half inning when Jaco drove in Izrael Trevino on a single to center field.

ENMU then scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth and then after CU got one back in the top half of the sixth, the home team added four more runs to take a 11-5 lead.

Down six, the Black and Gold chipped away at the lead thanks to a two RBI double from Jaylan Prince in the seventh and then a bases loaded walk in the ninth, but CU would leave the bases loaded in the final frame as the Greyhounds held on for the 11-8 win.

Andrew Garza was rolling along until he gave up seven runs during that 9-1 run by the greyhounds; the senior struck out five in 4.2 innings on the mound. After Sean Maher gave up four runs on four hits in 1.1 innings of work, Andres Rodriguez and Abel Rosario combined for two no-hit innings to close out the game.

Jaco led the Aggies with three hits, adding an RBI and two runs scored, while Prince was 2-4 with two RBI and crossed the plate twice. Additionally, Trevino walked five times while Cameron as a whole combined for 12 free rides, but struck out 14 times while leaving 13 runners on base.

While these four games in Portales are between Lone Star Conference opponents, they do not count towards league play.

Cameron, who is now 6-9 on the season, will play two more against the Greyhounds on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. (CT).
