Aggies sweep WNMU, CU men ranked No. 10 by ITA

SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Cameron tennis teams got a pair of Lone Star Conference wins against Western New Mexico, while the Aggie men were ranked No. 10 in the nation as the most recent Oracle/ITA rankings were released on Wednesday.

Cameron jumped from No. 24 in the Feb. 20 rankings to No. 10 after big wins against then No. 4 West Florida and then No. 9 Indianapolis. Vinicius Santos moved into the singles rankings, coming in at No. 20, while he and Julen Gutierrez moved up to two spots to No. 11 in doubles.

In their ninth straight win, the Aggie men dominated doubles play, winning 6-0 at both the two and three spots while Gutierrez and Santos won 6-1 at No. 1.

Santos took down No. 37 ranked Liam Fraboulet at the one singles spot to pace a sweep of singles play by the Aggies. All six matches were won in two sets and just one went past six games, which was the No. 5 match where Gutierrez won 7-5, 6-2.

The Cameron women won their second straight LSC match, but fell behind 1-0 after losing two out of three doubles matches. Rebeka Velasova and Alisa Savina pulled out the only doubles win for CU, winning 6-1 at No. 2. Pilar Jaurena and Melany Opolz battled to a tiebreak at No. 3, but fell 7-6 to their Mustang counterparts.

CU made up for their 1-0 deficit with five wins in singles play. Sarah Frendo, Velasova, Opolz, and Jaurena all won their matches in two sets, while Sara Petric won 6-2, 3-6, 10-5 at the three spot. In CU's only loss, Savina lost 7-5, 5-4 to WNMU's No. 4 singles player.

Two of the Aggie women found themselves ranked in the top-25 in singles play, with Zhenia Shviadok ranked No. 5 and Frendo moving up to No. 18. Shviadok and Frendo are also still ranked in the top-15 in doubles play, coming in at No. 12.

With the win, the Aggie men improve to 12-3 on the year and 2-0 in LSC play, while the CU women move to 5-8 overall and 2-0 against league opponents.

Cameron will look to continue their winning streaks on Saturday as they host Northwest Missouri State for a pair of matches at 11 a.m.
