Warren drives in five in loss to No. 6 WT

LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron softball team, who already clinched the series win on Thursday with a pair of wins, lost the finale against No. 6 West Texas A&M on Friday, 6-5.

The Lady Buffs, who were held to just one run during Thursday's doubleheader, quadrupled that number in the first inning of Friday's game. After back-to-back singles to lead off the inning, Rylee Willmon was able to strike out the next two batters to get a pair of outs. However, a walk of Ruby Salzman loaded the bases for Shanna McBroom, who unloaded them on one swing with a grand slam to put WT up 4-0.

Cameron answered with four runs of their own in the bottom of the third to tie the game. Brenna Busby was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and then stole second. After Khmari Edwards grounded out to the shortstop, Breley Webb walked to put two on for Callie Busby. C. Busby flew out to centerfield to put two outs on the board. Raley Long then hit a ground ball to short that bounced off Alex Cordell's leg allowing her to reach on the error and load the bases. Abbey Warren continued her big week by launching a ball over the left field fence, clearing the bases with her third homer of the year.

After a scoreless fourth inning, WT put two more on the board as McBroom came up with a one-out two-run homer to give her team a 6-4 advantage.

The Aggies responded by getting one run back in the half of the frame. C. Busby hit a ball to centerfield that bounced off the WT fielder's glove, allowing her to move all the way to second on the error. She then moved to third a groundout by Kylie French. Warren added her fifth RBI of the game in the next at bat with a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing C. Busby to come in to score.

Webb came in to pitch for CU with one out in the top of the sixth. She retired in the next two batters in order and then only faced three batters in the seventh thanks to a 6-4-3 double play.

The Black and Gold got runners on base in both of the final innings. B. Busby reached base via a walk with two outs in the sixth, but after stealing second, she was called out for leaving first base early. C. Busby walked with two outs in the seventh inning, but a French pop up ended the frame and the game.

Willmon, who is now 6-3 on the year, gave up six runs on six hits and five walks in 5.1 innings of work. She also struck out three WT hitters, while Webb threw 1.2 one-hit innings to close out the game. The duo combined to leave five runners on base.

At the plate, CU managed just four hits while walking five times. Warren was 1-2 with five RBI and a run scored, while Long was 1-2 with a run scored and B. Busby reached base twice and scored once.

Cameron is now 21-11 on the year and 8-7 in league play, while the Lady Buffs improve to 23-8 overall and 14-4 against Lone Star Conference opponents with the win.

The Aggies will be on the road for their next series, as they visit Western New Mexico for a three-game series next weekend, March 29-30.
