Edwards' big day caps series sweep at WNMU

SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Cameron softball team clinched the series sweep over Western New Mexico with a 12-4 win in game three on Saturday.

After CU scored 28 runs combined in the first two games of the series, they struggled getting started in the finale. Both teams went scoreless through the first three innings.

Cameron ended that drought in the top of the fourth, scoring five runs on two hits and three Mustang errors. Alyssa Osterdock got things started by driving in Tuner Whorton and Abbey Warren on a single to left center. Kaylyn Smith walked to but two runners on for Khmari Edwards, who cleared the bases with a three-run homer, giving the Aggiess the five-run advantage.

In the fifth, Smith drove in the sixth run of the game on a fielder's choice, before WNMU cut the lead in half with a three-run bottom of the frame.

The Mustangs got even closer in the bottom of the sixth, as a hit and an error combined to bring in their fourth run of the game.

Cameron was not fazed by just the two-run lead, and added six more runs to the scoreboard in the top of the seventh. Back-to-back walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for Smith, who hit into a fielder's choice that saw Kacie Gilreath thrown out at home. CU then strung together five straight singles to scored five runs in the inning. The sixth came on a sacrifice fly from Kylie French.

Rylee Willmon earned her seventh win of the season, giving up just three earned runs in five innings in the circle. Bethany Hines pitched the final two frames, giving up one unearned run on two hits.

Edwards had the big day at the plate for CU, going 3-4 with five RBI and two runs scored. Raley Long also had a pair of hits, while Callie Busby chipped in two; Osterdock recorded two of CU's 12 RBI.

The Aggies are now 24-11 on the season and 11-7 in Lone Star Conference play.

Next up for Cameron, will be a three-game series at McCord Field, April 5-6, against the always tough Angelo State Rambelles.
