Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

CU tennis wins a pair against rival MSU

LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron tennis teams closed out the regular season strong by taking a pair of matches against rival MSU Texas on Thursday.

The men's match had championship implications, as the two teams entered the day with identical 2-0 Lone Star Conference records. Meaning, the winner would claim the conference's regular season title.

The No. 17 ranked CU men started strong, winning all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. The No. 26 ranked pairing of Vinicius Santos and Julen Gutierrez defeated the No. 15 ranked duo of Ben Westwick and Alberto Diaz 7-6, and No. 40 Przemyslaw Zielinski and Mritunjay Badola beat their opponents by the same score. The match in the three spot was also close, with Oscar del Granado and Pierre Marion winning 7-5 to sweep doubles play.

Marion got singles started for the Aggies in singles, winning 6-4, 6-2 in the six spot, while Gutierrez and Zielinski both won in two sets at the three and fifth positions to clinch the win. CU's two loses came at No. 2 and No. 4, while No. 8 Santos earned the fifth point with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 win in the No. 1 position against the second ranked Angel Palacios.

Cameron's women faced a tough test entering their match against the No. 12 ranked Mustangs. That test got even harder after doubles play, as CU lost all three matches, falling behind in the match 1-0. The closest of the three matches came at No. 2, where Sarah Frendo and Sara Petric lost 7-5 to their MSU counterparts.

The No. 5 ranked Frendo quickly erased that deficit, winning 6-1, 6-1 in the top singles match. Cameron then lost at No. 6, but Rebeka Velasova evened the match back up with a 7-6, 6-1 win at No. 2. CU then lost at No. 5, allowing MSU to take a 3-2 lead, needing just one win to claim the win. The Aggies then got big three set wins from Alisa Savina and Petric to take down the Mustangs 4-3.

Cameron's men finish the regular season with a 17-3 overall record and a perfect 3-0 conference mark, clinching the top seed in the upcoming LSC Championship Tournament.

The CU women finish up with a 9-13 overall mark while going 4-2 against league opponents. They finish tied for second in the conference standings with MSU and Texas A&M-Kingsville. CU will be the three-seed in the tournament, as they lost their regular season match to the Javelinas.

Next up for the Black and Gold will be the LSC Tournament, which will take place in Waco, Texas, May 2-4. The men's first match will be at 12 p.m. on Friday, while the women's will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday.
