Cameron drops series opener at UTPB

ODESSA, Texas – The Cameron baseball team opened the weekend off with an 8-7 loss in the series opener at UT Permian Basin on Friday.

After the Falcons took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first, Cameron responded with a five spot in the top of the second to take their first lead of the weekend. CU loaded the bases with a walk and a pair of hit batters, allowing Nate Pecota to drive in a pair on a double down the left field line.

Jaylan Prince brought home another one as he reached on a UTPB fielding error and Pierce Khan brought home Trey Bigford on a sacrifice fly to center, giving the Black and Gold a 5-2 lead.

Cameron added one more in the third with Myles Miller tripling to right field and Hayden Jaco bringing him on a sacrifice fly. However, CU's four-run lead was quickly erased as UTPB scored five straight runs from the fourth through the fifth inning to take a 7-6 lead.

Two innings later, the Aggies were able to tie the game thanks to a leadoff singles from Miller and Jaco and a sacrifice fly from Jordan Harrison-Dudley. The Falcons answered with another run in the bottom of the eight to go back up by a run.

The Aggies had a chance in the top of the ninth, with Prince walking and Khan hitting a single to put a pair of runners with no outs, but CU was unable to score the tying run, falling 8-7 in the opener.

Miller had two of the Black and Gold's eight hits and scored three runs. Pecota drove in a pair of runs on his second inning double, while four other CU batters recorded an RBI in the contest.

Drew Henderson started the game on the mound for the Aggies, giving up six earned runs on 10 hits and a walk; he struck out four batters in 4.1 innings of work. Abel Rosario went 2.2 innings and gave up one run on a pair of walks, while Sean Maher gave up one hit in the eighth inning.
