ODESSA, Texas – The Cameron University baseball team and their opponents UT Permian Basin combined for 39 runs on Saturday as they split a doubleheader, with CU taking game one 11-6 and the Falcons winning the nightcap 16-6.
UTPB struck first on Saturday, scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning. Cameron answered quickly with three runs in the second to go up by two.
Jaylan Prince brought home
Briton Schiewe on a single to center field and then
Pierce Khan doubled to score both Prince and
Nate Pecota.
An inning later, the Black and Gold exploded for seven runs to take a 10-1 lead.
Trey Bigford led things off with a triple with the bases loaded, bringing home three runs, and then Prince and Khan hit back-to-back doubles to score two more.
Izrael Trevino capped off the inning with a two-run homer to right, his seventh long ball of the season.
UT Permian Basin scored five straight to get to within four of the Aggies, but a
Dillon Turney RBI single in the seventh was the final blow as CU took game one 11-6.
Prince and Khan both had three hits in Saturday's opener, with Khan driving and Prince bringing home two. Trevino also had a pair of RBI while Bigford recorded three on his triple in the third.
In the second game, the Aggies got off to an early 4-0 lead thanks to a trio of RBI knocks from Turney, Trevino and
Hayden Jaco in the top of the first. Turney brought home
Myles Miller and Khan on a double to left center and then score on a Trevino double. Jaco then drove in Trevino on a single to left field.
The Falcons then scored nine runs in the bottom of the frame, four in the second, one in the third, and two more in the fourth to take a 16-4 lead.
Cameron got two back in the top of the fifth as Pecota drove in Khan on a single through the right side and Turney scored on a wild pitch in the next at bat. However, those two runs made just a small dent into the UTPB lead as they went on to win 16-6.
Pecota led the Black and Gold in game two with two hits, while Turney drove in two runs and scored two as well.
The Aggies, who are now 20-24 on the year and 11-8 in Lone Star Conference play, will look to salvage at least a split of the four-game series with a win in the finale on Sunday at 1 p.m.
