CU tennis falls in exhibition matches at UTA

ARLINGTON, Texas – In their first tune-ups for the 2020 spring season, the Cameron tennis teams dropped a pair of exhibition matches to Division I UT Arlington on Saturday.

Men: UTA 5, Cameron 1
The Cameron men enter the 2020 season ranked No. 20 in the ITA's preseason poll, but they faced a tough test in their first of two exhibitions against the DI Mavericks. The Aggies started off the match up 1-0 after winning two out of the three doubles contests.

Pierre Marion and 2019 All-American Julen Gutierrez won their match in the No. 1 doubles spot 6-4, as did Oscar del Granado and Carlos Vidal at No. 3. CU's only pair to fall on Saturday was at No. 2 with transfer Maycon Dias and freshman Bruno Vietri losing 6-1 to their UTA counterpart.

Cameron did not have the same success in singles play, losing all but one of the six matches, the No. 6 match which ended unfinished. The closes of the five matches came at No. 1, where Vietri, who is ranked No. 28 in the ITA's DII singles rankings, lost 6-3, 6-4 to the Mavericks opponent.

Women: UTA 4, Cameron 0
The Aggie women did not have a lot of success against UT Arlington on Saturday. They opened the match down 1-0 after dropping all three doubles matches. Pilar Jaurena and Vasilisa Polunova had the only match that was played all the way through, losing 6-0 at No. 1, while Alisa Savina and Julianne Garcia were up 2-3 before the match could end as the No. 3 match was conceded to UTA by default.

In singles, just two matches were played to the end with Savina losing 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 and Jaurena losing her match at No. 4, 6-2, 6-0. Garcia had her opponent tied at six in the first set before the match was called, while Polunova and Melany Opolz were both trailing in the second sets of their matches.

What's next:
Both Cameron tennis teams will be back in action on Feb. 3 when they face Cowley County CC in Oklahoma City, Okla. for their second exhibition match of the spring.
