Aggies split two matches in Missouri

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The No. 20 ranked Cameron men's tennis team begins the spring season with a 1-1 record after losing to a ranked Drury team and beating Washburn this weekend.

Match 1 – No. 20 Drury 5, No. 20 Cameron 2
Cameron's first match of the weekend on Friday night was a battle of the No. 20 ranked teams (the two squads are tied in the ITA rankings). The Panthers won all three doubles matches to earn the 1-0 lead in the match. The top battle of the three came at No. 1, where CU's Pierre Marion and Julen Gutierrez fell to the 19th ranked duo of Nico Hadeler and Gregor Kokalj 7-6.

The Aggies two points came from wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 singles matches. Oscar del Granado claimed a 6-2, 7-6 win at two, while Marion defeated his Panther counterpart 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 at the three spot. The ranked battle at the top spot between No. 28 Bruno Vietri and No. 20 Hadeler went the way of Drury as Hadeler earned the comeback win 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. Carlos Vidal also took his opponent to three sets in a loss at No. 5.

Match 2 – No. 20 Cameron 6, Washburn 1
Cameron's bounce back win over the Ichabods started with two wins during double play. Marion and Gutierrez won their match 6-4 in the No. 1 spot, while Vietri and Maycon Dias won 6-1 in the second spot.

The Aggies only loss of the match came in the six singles contest, but three of their wins were forced to three sets. Vietri was forced to three sets in a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 win, del Granado won in three sets 7-5, 6-7, 7-6 at No. 2, and Marion won 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in the three spot. Additionally, Gutierrez claimed a dominant 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4 while Dias won his match at No. 5 6-3, 7-6.

Up next:
The Aggies' next three matches will be against a trio of top ranked JUCO squad. The first will be CU's first home match of the spring, next Friday, Feb. 14, against Seward County CC.
