WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Aggie men's tennis program put together a strong effort at the ITA South Central Regional this weekend with two players making it to the singles draw quarterfinals on Saturday.
In their big event of the fall, the annual ITA Fall Regional, Cameron sent four student-athletes,
Baptiste Mercier,
Carlos Vidal,
Tomas Almeida, and
Sean Batkis, set to compete against individuals and doubles team from around the region.
Mercier and Vidal had the big performances of the weekend for the Black and Gold, as both made it to the quarterfinals of the singles draw. The newcomer Mercier started out as the 12 seed and earned three straight two-set wins before falling to the eventual tournament winner Gonzaolo Fernandez from UT Tyler, 6-4, 6-3. Vidal did just the same on the other side of the bracket with his only loss coming in the quarterfinals to Alex Martinez Roca of Midwestern State, 6-2, 6-2.
Additionally, Almeida fell one round short of his teammates, winning two matches before losing in the round of 16 to UTT's Egor Shestakov, 6-2, 5-7, 10-8. Batkis lost his first round match in the main draw, but was able to make it to the quarters of the consolation draw before losing to Alvaro Soler from St. Mary's.
In doubles, Mercier and Vidal won their opening match 6-1 but could not get past the second round. Batkis and Almedia fell in their opening round match, but were able to get to the quarters of the consolation bracket before suffering their second loss.
Now that the ITA Regional is checked off the schedule, the Cameron men will conclude their fall season on Oct. 22-23 at the MSU Invitational right back in Wichita Falls, Texas.
