LAWTON – The Cameron baseball team returned to Lone Star Conference action on Thursday, but were unable to snap their losing skid, falling to UT Permian Basin 11-4 and 13-3.
The Cameron Aggies entered Thursday's doubleheader having lost the last four contests, falling to non-conference foe Augustana last weekend. CU looked to snap that streak by hosting the 3-8 UTPB Falcons at McCord Field.
In game one, if it weren't for a five-run first inning, the Aggies were right there with UTPB. Control was a problem for CU starter
Tyler Cornett, who issued three free passes as well as giving up three hits in the first frame. He was relieved by
Tyler Garcia, who recorded the final two outs of the frame.
The Aggies responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame as
Jordan Harrison-Dudley and
Ryan Carter combined for back-to-back doubles to cut the UTPB lead to three. Harrison-Dudley delivered another hit in the bottom of the second, driving in
Beau Williams for CU's third run of game one.
UT Permian Basin added two more in the third inning to take a 7-3 lead over the hometown Aggies. Cameron produced their fourth run in the bottom of the seventh, as freshman S'Mauri Abram led-off the frame with a double down the left-field line and then came in to score of a sacrifice fly by Williams.
The Falcons put any sign of a comeback to rest in the final two innings as they added four insurance runs, three in the eighth and one in the ninth, to claim the 11-4 win.
Harrison-Dudley provided two of CU's eight hits, while Carter drove in two on his double in the first. The Aggies struck out 11 times and stranded four runners on the base-paths.
Garcia provided Aggie skipper
Kyle Williams with a solid 5.2 innings of work out of the bullpen, giving up two runs on six hits and a pair of walks.
Nolan Archuleta,
Jayce Clem, and
Carter Bourg finished out the game on the mound.
In game two, the Falcons put up crooked numbers in the second, third, and fourth innings for 10 early runs. They added single runs in the fifth, seventh, and ninth to give them 13 runs on 11 hits in the win.
Clem delivered an RBI single in the third that brought home
Cooper Edwards, who walked to leadoff the inning. That run set the score at 10-1 after three.
Cameron answered UTPB's fifth inning run with two more of their own in the bottom of the frame. This time Williams delivered the RBI hit, driving in
Erik Ohman and Edwards on a double to right center-field.
That would be all for the Black and Gold offense, that was held to just five hits while striking out 12 times and leaving eight runners on base in the doubleheader night-cap.
Clem provided two of Cameron's five hits, while Williams reached base three times and drove in a pair in the loss.
On the mound,
Tyler Gregg lasted two innings, giving up three earned runs on three hits and a pair of walks; he struck out two Falcon hitters.
Michael Womack gave up two earned runs in 1.1 no-hit innings of relief as he fell victim to five free passes.
Andres Rodriguez finished off the fourth for Womack, and then Williams sent out a new pitcher in each of the last five innings.
Cameron, (3-9, 3-5 LSC) and UT Permian Basin (4-8, 4-7 LSC) will finish out the three-game set on Friday with the series finale beginning at 1 p.m. at McCord Field.
