AUSTIN, Texas – A pitching gem from
Breley Webb in game one was matched by the St. Edward's game two starter as Aggie softball split Sunday's doubleheader against the Hilltoppers.
Cameron entered Sunday's two-step with hopes of getting back to .500 in Lone Star Conference play after sweeping St. Mary's in a pair of close games on Friday. Hits were hard to come by in Austin, as both games turned into pitcher's duels with each team getting complete game shutouts from a pair of starters. Â
Like they have twice already this week, the Aggies were benefited by a pitching gem from Webb in game one. The sophomore struck out a career-best three hitters, while facing just three batters over the minimum by giving up three hits in the complete game shutout.
The performance by Webb would have just needed one run of support by the Cameron offense, but they decided to put up three runs on four hits in their fifth-straight win.
The Black and Gold put up two runs in the top of the second. With two outs and the bases loaded,
Brenna Busby did what she has a lot this season, getting hit by a pitch to bring home Webb from third.
Mikayla Richmond singled in the next at-bat to bring home the second run.
A double steal by the two previously mentioned players Richmond and Busby resulted in CU's third run of the game in the top of the fourth inning.
The Hilltoppers didn't have a runner get past second base all game, as Webb gave up just one extra-base hit, a double with one out in the bottom of the seventh. She went on to retire the next two batters via strikeouts to secure the shutout.
Callie Christensen provided two of CU's four hits, while Busby reached base three times, scored once, and drove in a run. Cameron drew 11 walks and left 13 runners on base in the 3-0 win.
In game two, the Aggies were on the wrong side of a three-hit, complete-game shutout. St. Edward's Cadie Belle Currie matched Webb's efforts with her own pitching gem, retiring six Aggies via strikeouts and walking a pair in her seven-inning outing.
If it weren't for a four-run second inning, CU starter
Bethany Hines matched her Hilltopper counterpart. She gave up six hits, four in the multi-run second inning and struck out three in her fourth loss of the season; only two of the four runs scored were earned.
The Aggies left six runners on base in the game two loss, with
Khmari Edwards,
Madyson Marvulli, and
Haley Castle being responsible for the three hits; Edwards also reached via a walk.
Cameron, despite going 3-1 during the weekend, was unable to get above .500 in league play, as the loss moves their record to 5-7 against the Lone Star Conference and 14-10 overall. Their road stretch continues next weekend when they visit Texas Woman's for two on Friday, March 26, and then Midwestern State on Sunday, March 28.
