DENTON, Texas – The Cameron softball team continues their strong play with a pair of wins against Texas Woman's on Friday night, winning 5-2 and 9-1 behind two strong pitching outings by
Breley Webb and
Bethany Hines.
After going 5-1 last week, the Cameron Aggies started this weekend off the right way with a pair of decisive Lone Star Conference wins over the Pioneers to move back to .500 in league play. CU is now 16-10 on the year and 7-7 against conference foes after the doubleheader sweep.
With Webb, who tallied 25 strikeouts in three outings last week, in the circle in game one, the Aggie offense didn't need to put up a ton of runs on the scoreboard, but they did strike for five scores on eight hits.
The first of those five runs came early as a Madyson Marvilli RBI single in the first inning allowed
Khmari Edwards to come home to score.
Haley Castle, who is on a hot-streak of her own, drove in the second run of the inning on a RBI single that brought
Callie Christensen across the plate.
Edwards added to the lead in the second, hitting a monster home run to give her team a 3-0 advantage. Two more runs came in to score in the fifth thanks to a Webb sacrifice fly and a Marvulli groundout.
Webb limited damage all game long, stranding eight TWU runners on base in the outing. She allowed single runs in both the fifth and seventh innings, but her eight strikeouts helped her work out of multiple jams.
Edwards and Marvulli each had a pair of hits in game one, while Edwards scored three times and drove in another. Cameron also had five stolen bases in the win with Edwards swiping three bags and
Mikayla Richmond adding the other two.
In game two, senior
Bethany Hines allowed just one run of five hits and a walk while striking out a pair in her 6th win of the season. That lone run came in the bottom of the sixth inning with one out and the bases loaded, but a pop-out double-play got Hines out of it and secured the run-rule victory.
The Aggies scored two runs in all but two of the six innings, scoring none in the first and one in the fifth. Castle got things started with a two-run homer in the second, her team-leading seventh of the season. Two more came in on a Edwards double in the third, adding to her impressive day at the plate and giving CU a 4-0 lead.
In the fourth, RBI singles by
Brenna Busby and
Skylar McCord resulted in two more for CU, which was followed in the fifth by another RBI double by Webb.
Jaclyn Gray drove in Busby on a sacrifice fly in the sixth and then a throwing error allowed Richmond to score after a stolen base.
Busby finished with four of Cameron's 11 hits in game two, scoring three runs and adding an RBI. Edwards drove in two, bringing her doubleheader RBI total to three, while Webb had a pair of hits and Castle drove in two on the homer.
Cameron will look to remain perfect on the weekend when they face Midwestern State in a doubleheader on Sunday, March 28, in Wichita Falls, Texas. The Mustangs dropped a pair to Oklahoma Christian on Friday and have now lost 12 straight.
