CU tennis in top-4 of initial ITA region rankings

TEMPE, Ariz. – Both of the Cameron tennis programs are ranked in the top-4 of their respective regions as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) released a new set of rankings on Tuesday.

The ITA released the second edition of the NCAA Division II top-25 rankings as well as the first South Central Region rankings of the spring on Tuesday afternoon.

Cameron's men, who won their last five matches against division opponents before falling to the No. 3 ranked junior college squad last Saturday, are currently receiving votes in the top-25 list and are second in the South Central Region, behind conference foe Midwestern State, who is No. 19 in the top-25 and they face on Friday.

Maycon Dias has been solid for the Aggies playing mostly on court three. The junior is 9-2 in singles this season, while Oscar del Granado, Joao Duleba, and Alvaro Chavez are all 6-4. Also 9-2 on the year is the one doubles team of Bruno Vietri and del Granado with the court two duo of Dias and Duleba going 8-3 to start the season.

The Aggie women, who opened the season with seven straight wins before going 1-3 since, is ranked fourth in the South Central Region in the initial rankings. They are behind only league foes Angelo State, Midwestern State, and St. Mary's. CU will face the No. 17 ranked Mustangs at home on Friday and then the rest of the conference in the following weeks.

A quartet of Aggies are above .500 in singles play to start the spring. Alex Lopez leads the way with an 8-2 mark playing at three and four for CU. Both Lea Manga and Julianne Garcia are 7-3, while Pilar Jaurena is 5-1 in her six matches playing on court six. In doubles, the duo of Manga and Alisa Savina are 6-2 on court one to lead the Black and Gold.

Both matches against Midwestern State will be played at the Streich-Henry Tennis Complex on Friday, March 26, and both are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
