LAWTON – Despite a leadoff homer by shortstop
Erik Ohman, the Aggie bats were unable to catch fire in the finale of the four-game series against Augustana, losing 10-2 on Sunday.
Cameron, who dropped the first three games of the series against the tough non-conference foe, was looking to salvage at least one game of the series as the two teams wrapped up the weekend slate at McCord Field on Sunday.
The Vikings handed the ball to their ace, Max Steffens, who was voted the Northern Sun Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year to begin the season to finish off the sweep, while CU skipper
Kyle Williams turned to
Marcos Feria toe the rubber.
Feria got himself into a sticky situation in the first as he walked the first two batters of the inning. Both runners tried to advance a base on a passed ball and CU backstop
Cooper Edwards' throw down to third went into leftfield, allowing Carter Howell to score and give his team an early 1-0 lead. Feria was able to get a pair of strikeouts to limit the damage in the first.
In the bottom of the frame, Ohman greeted Steffens with a long home run to left-centerfield and just like that it was a new ballgame.
Feria struck out two more hitters in a clean second inning, but in the third, another leadoff walk came back to bite him as a triple by Howell brought home the Vikings' second run of the day. They would add one more as Howell came in to score on a dropped pop up, that would have been the last out of the frame.
Already leading 3-1, Augustana added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings and then broke things open with a four-run inning in the top of the eighth and then tagged another on in the ninth to give them a 10-1 advantage over CU.
Cameron managed to bring one more run across the plate, as
Ryan Carter singled to left center, bringing home
Jayce Clem from third, who reached on a dropped third strike to open the frame. The Aggies continued to put pressure on reliever Thomas Bruss as another dropped third strike and a walk drawn by
Nate Vargo loaded the bases. However, Bruss settled in and set down the next three batters in order via the swinging strikeout to end the game.
The Aggies managed just four hits in the game and left seven runners on the basepaths. Ohman and Carter provided the two RBI, while Clem and
Casey Yeager added the remaining two hits.
Feria struck out seven hitters while giving up three earned runs on five hits and four walks in his five innings of work.
Tyler Gregg provided two scoreless innings on the bump, while Clem threw the remaining two innings, striking out five hitters while giving up four earned runs on only one hit.
The Augustana staff combined for 18 punch-outs compared to just one free pass. Steffens and relievers Tony Lanier and Bruss each had over five K's for the Vikings on Sunday. Augustana got big days at the plate from Christian Kuzemka and JT Mix, who both and two hits and a pair of RBI. Â
Cameron falls to 3-7 on the season, but their 3-3 Lone Star Conference record remains in-tact. They return to league action next weekend when they host UT Permian Basin for three games that will be played out over three days. Game one of the series will kick off at 3 p.m. on Friday, March 12.
