SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Aggies powered their way to a sweep of Western New Mexico on Friday, beating the Mustangs 8-3 and 16-6 behind five homers, including two from
Callie Christensen.
The Cameron softball team kept their hot-streak rolling as they earned two dominant wins in New Mexico on Friday afternoon. They have now won five straight games and are 22-12 on the season and 13-9 in league play.
In game one, the Aggies got the scoring started early as a triple by
Brenna Busby and a sacrifice fly by
Khmari Edwards to leadoff the first inning got the scoring started. A pair of fielder's choice RBI in the fourth inning extended the CU lead to 3-0.
Edwards delivered in the clutch again in the fifth with a double that brough home
Kylie French. Christensen followed that up with a three-run homer, her first of the game and 10th of the season, to put the Aggies up 7-0.
Christensen came through again in the seventh as
Kaylyn Smith scored on an infield pop-up, showing off the Aggies' speed. The Mustangs scored three runs on a home in the bottom of the frame, but that would be all they would get against freshman
Jocelyn Bright in the circle.
Bright earned her fifth win with the complete game. She gave up just the three runs on six hits and five walks while striking out seven WNMU hitters.
Christensen had a pair of hits, scored twice, and drove in four runs at the plate. Edwards added two RBI and had a pair of hits, tying the former, French and Smith for the team-high.
Cameron opened game two with a five-run inning thanks to another RBI double by Edwards and two-run homers by Christensen and
Haley Castle.
After WNMU scored two runs in the second, the Aggies put together another five-run frame in the third. French,
Jaclyn Gray, and Smith all had RBI hits before Busby capped things off with a two-run homer of her own. The Mustangs answered with a four-run bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to 10-6.
Cameron's biggest inning, and the one that put the game away, came in the fifth when the scored six more runs to give them a 16-6 lead. Smith and Edwards each had two-RBI doubles and then
Madyson Marvulli capped things off with a three-run homer, the Aggies fifth of the day.
Bethany Hines, the program's career wins leader, came in the finish things off late after
Jade Guzman gave up the six runs on eight hits. Hines did not allow a run on four hits while striking out four batters in her ninth win of the year.
Edwards, Christensen, Castle, French, Gray, and Smith all had two-hit games as Cameron tallied 15 hits as a team, stranding just three runners on base in the offensive explosion. Edwards and Marvulli both had three RBI the game two win. Christensen's 11th homer put her at the top of the league rankings in the statistic category.
Cameron will look to extend their winning streak on Sunday, April 18, when they visit UT Permian Basin for another Lone Star Conference doubleheader. Game one is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. in Odessa, Texas.
