ODESSA, Texas – After a 10-run offensive outburst in game one against UT Permian Basin on Sunday, the Aggies were shutout in game two to split the Lone Star Conference doubleheader.
After a doubleheader sweep at Western New Mexico where they scored 24 runs, the Cameron softball team carried their five-game winning streak into Odessa to take on the Falcons. Instead of leaving with an eight-game stretch of victories, CU ended up with a split on Sunday after two completely different contests.
Cameron used a big second inning and late runs to come away with a 10-4 win in the opening game of the doubleheader.
A fielder's choice by
Madyson Marvulli allowed
Khmari Edwards to score in the top of the first and give the Black and Gold a 1-0 advantage.
After UTPB got three runs in the bottom of the first, the Aggies exploded for a five run inning in the second. A wild pitch and an error allowed the first two runs of the frame to score and then
Breley Webb delivered her first home run of the season, bringing home
Callie Christensen and Edwards to give CU a 6-3 lead.
In the fourth, a passes ball allowed
Kaylyn Smith to score from third and then Webb drove in
Brenna Busby on a sacrifice fly for her fourth RBI of the game. Cameron added to their lead with two more runs in the fifth as
Kylie French hit a sac fly that brought home
Mikayla Richmond and then Christiansen drew a bases loaded walk.
Down 10-3, the Falcons got one run back in the sixth, but that would be all they would get as
Bethany Hines got a one-two-three inning in the seventh to secure the win.
Hines gave up just one earned run in four innings of work while striking out a pair of hitters. Webb pitched the other three innings, giving up just two hits and striking out a pair in the circle.
The sophomore Webb finished the game with a pair of hits and four RBI. Christensen reached base four times with one hit and three walks. Smith had a team-high three hits and scored three times while Richmond had a pair of hits and scored twice in the 10-4 win.
Game two was the complete opposite result as Cameron was held to just three hits in a 3-0 loss.
The Falcons did most of their damage in the first inning, scoring two runs on a homer by Caile Munoz. They added another run in the fifth inning on an Aggie error.
Hines gave worked the opening four innings in the circle for CU, giving up the three runs on six hits while recording a pair of strikeouts.
Jocelyn Bright pitched the remaining two frames, allowing just one base runner via a walk.
Webb, Marvulli, and Smith each had hits in the loss, while Christensen and Richmond reached via walks against the Falcons' Marina Salinas, who pitched the three-hit shutout.
Cameron is now 23-13 on the season and 14-10 in league play after the split. Their final three LSC doubleheaders on the schedule are against top-10 ranked opponents. That stretch starts next weekend when they host No. 6 Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday, April 23, and No. 3 UT Tyler on Sunday, April 25, at the McMahon Field and Athletics Center.
