Aggies go for the South Central Region title on Tuesday against St. Mary's

ARLINGTON, Texas – The No. 29 ranked Aggie men's tennis team begins the NCAA Division II Tournament on Tuesday when they face off against No. 37 St. Mary's in the South Central Regional final at the Arlington Tennis Center.

After the Lone Star Conference Championship was canceled due to weather last weekend, the Cameron men were named the region's top seed, as they were the top seed in the league tournament. They will face the three-seed Rattlers, who beat Midwestern State in the lone semifinal, 4-1, on Monday.

Since 1983, the Cameron men have been in the NCAA Tournament 23 times, posting a 13-23 record. They have gone to the postseason seven out of the last eight years (excluding the shortened 2020 season), including in 2019 when they won the regional 4-0 over St. Edward's before falling in the Round of 16 to West Florida.

Cameron has won multiple regionals during that span and will need just one win to do the same this season. Their last win in the Round of 16 came back in 2015 when they beat Mercyhurst 5-0 before falling to Barry in the quarterfinals. CU has now finished in the top four of the NCAA Tournament since 1983.

The 2021 Aggies currently have two players ranked in the Oracle ITA top-50 singles players. Oscar del Granado, who posted an 11-6 record during the regular season, is ranked No. 43 and Bruno Vietri, who was 6-7 as CU's top one player, is ranked No. 47. Additionally, Carlos Vidal enters the postseason with an eight match winning streak, while Maycon Dias is 14-4 this season playing mostly at three.

Cameron's duo of del Granado and Vietri are ranked No. 8 in the division in doubles play. They have put together a 12-2 record this season, playing at one, and have won their last six matches. Cameron's No. 2 duo of Dias and Joao Duleba have put together a strong resume as well, going 13-5 this season with a 5-2 record in LSC play.

The 11-7 Aggies face a 14-4 St. Mary's team, who they lost 4-3 to in their one previous meeting this season in Lawton on April 10. Cameron was without two of their top six players in that match (Vietri and Alvaro Chavez) and still lost by just one point with the Rattlers taking four of the six singles matches, with each one coming in three sets.

Cameron's South Central Regional final against the Rattlers is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the Arlington Tennis Center, barring a scheduled change due to weather.
