DENTON, Texas – The Cameron women's golf team had one of the biggest jumps on the leaderboard in the second round of the DBU Women's Classic on Monday, going from 13th to ninth place after 36 holes of play.
The Aggies opened the season two weeks ago at the DBU Invitational and this week they take on a loaded field at the DBU Women's Classic at the Wildhorse Golf Club at Robson Ranch. While the first of the tournaments hosted by the Patriots was a one-day event, this week's event is set to take place over two days with the opening two rounds on Monday and the final round on Tuesday.
In the first round, the Aggies put up a score of 305, but with the loaded field, the score had them in 13th after the first 18 holes of play on Monday. Just 15 strokes separated Cameron from the leaders after one round, St. Mary's and Lynn.
Gerdur Ragnarsdottir led CU with a 74 in the opening round, while
Iona Roska was one stroke back of her younger teammate with a 75.
Ashley Davis and
Ellie Fellers both added scores of 78 for the Aggies, while
Emma Englefield had the throw-away score of the round with an 83.
In the second round, Roska was locked in on the course, shooting a round of 69 which was capped by an eagle on hole 12. Her 144 two-round score has her tied for seventh individually, moving up 19 spots from the first round.
Davis had tied for the second best second score in the Aggie lineup with Englefield, as both players shot 74 during the afternoon. Additionally, Fellers added a 76 and Ragnarsdottir carded a 77. The has a 151 through 36 holes of action, with Davis owning a 152 score, Fellers with a 154, and Englefield has a 157.
Cameron's two-round score of 598, has them within seven strokes of the top-5 teams. StMU took sole possession of first place with a 285 in the second round on Monday, while DBU moved into a tie with Lynn for second place. Indianapolis and West Texas A&M are currently in fourth and fifth.
Individually, North Georgia's Madeline Ananthasane leads the field, shooting a 66 in the opening round and then a 71 in the second, giving her a seven-under score of 137.
Roska and the Aggies will try and keep moving up the team leaderboard in the final round of the DBU Classic when they tee off on Tuesday morning. They will also hope for better conditions as players were dealing with temperatures in the 100s throughout the afternoon.
