LAWTON – The Cameron volleyball team continues their search for their first Lone Star Conference win as they visit Texas Woman's and DBU this weekend.
Despite steady improvement on the court, the Aggies record has dropped to 1-13 overall and 0-4 in league play after dropping a pair of matches last weekend against Lubbock Christian and No. 3 Angelo State. They will look to snap their current 12-match losing skid this weekend, facing the Pioneers on Friday and the Lady Patriots on Saturday.
EARLY DAMAGE
Cameron has done a good job this season of getting on teams early in sets but have had trouble closing them out. That was the case on Saturday against a top-5 ranked ASU squad that CU had stunned early on. In the opening set against the Belles, the Aggies used a 8-2 run powered by two kills and a block by
Caitlyn Henderson to give the team an early advantage.
INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR
The Aggies have a trio of international student-athletes that have started to pick up their game in the last few matches. Junior
Natalia Araujo led CU with seven kills and added a block against ASU, her best match of the season. Sophomore
Jessica Lipkit is one of the team's top middles, has had six straight matches with at least three kills and only one error, and leads the team with 35.0 total blocks. Freshman
Noemie Narbonne has shown flashes as the Aggies starting setter, averaging 3.98 assists per set along with a team-high 12 service aces.
BLOCK STARS
Cameron continues to be one of the top teams in the league at stuffing teams at the net, averaging 1.9 blocks per set, which ranks seventh in the LSC. Lipkit leads that charge with her 35 blocks while
Taylor Hervey has 29,
Arianna Navarrete has 20 and five others have over 10 this season.
SCOUTING TEXAS WOMAN'S
The Pioneers have opened the year with a 5-9 record and are 1-3 in league play. They enter the weekend on a four-match losing streak after having lost to East Central in straight sets on Wednesday night. TWU averaged 11.6 kills per set as a team and like Cameron, blocks 1.9 balls per frame. Monica Wood and Trixie Oche lead the way with 0.77 blocks per set each, while Tylar Roberson and Elizabeth Ugbaja power the attack with over 80 kills each. Additionally, Lizzy Reed leads the team with 5.08 assists per set and 20 service aces.
SCOUTING DBU
The Patriots have had an interesting start to the season. They are just 4-1 with four of those matches being LSC contests, after having seven of their non-conference matches canceled due to health and safety protocols. Statistically, DBU is averaging 13.1 kills per set while hitting over .200 on the attack. That effort is led by Halee Van Poppel, who averages 4.65 kills and hits over .200 as well. Freshman Aryn Walton has a team-high 108 assists with nine aces this season, while Alyssa Parks has a team-best 18 blocks through five matches.
LOOKING AHEAD
Cameron's road stretch continues next Tuesday, Oct. 5, when they visit in-state, non-conference foe Southern Nazarene. They will then follow that up with a home weekend in which they face UT Tyler and A&M-Commerce on Oct. 8 and 9 respectively. Friday will be CU's annual "Dig Pink" night and Saturday will be the First Responders/Front Line Workers Appreciation night. More info about each event will be coming soon.
