Aggies drop home opener to St. Edward's

LAWTON – Late inning woes prove costly in the Aggie baseball team's 15-7 loss to St. Edward's on Friday at McCord Field.

After going 2-2 against a tough Texas A&M-Kingsville team last week with two great pitching performances, Cameron looked to carry their momentum into their first home series of the 2022 season. However, after keeping it close for seven innings, The Hilltoppers scored 12 runs in the final two innings to come away with the win.

On a blustery day at McCord Field, SEU opened the game with a first inning run thanks to a double over Tyler Coleman's head in right field. In the bottom of the second, the Aggies got on the board as Kalen Haynes came up with a clutch two-out hit driving in Jayce Clem from third to tie the game.

The Aggies added another run in the fourth with Haynes coming through again by driving in Clem on a grounder to second base. SEU answered with two runs in the top of the fifth, tying the game on an infield hit and then taking the lead on a wild pitch.

Marcos Feria had a solid start, striking out seven batters in five innings, but he gave up the three runs on five hits and a pair of walks.

Carter Bourg threw the next 1.1 innings for the Aggies, allowing three hits and recording a strikeout during his scoreless outing. Devin Paz came in to pitch in the seventh, recording two outs to strand two SEU batters on base.

Things started to unravel for Paz in the eighth when he gave up three straight hits including a pair of doubled that resulted in two more Hilltopper runs. CU head coach Kyle Williams brought in Evan Nichols to try and stop the run, but he hit two batters and gave up a two RBI single without recording an out. Ben Williams finished off the inning, but not before two more runs came in to score, giving the road team a 9-2 lead.

After the Hilltoppers added six more runs in the top of the ninth, making it 15-2, Cameron tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the inning. A pair of hit batters and a walk loaded the bases and then a wild pitch allowed Haynes to score from third. Erik Ohman then drove in Zac DeLong on a single to left.

A Beau Williams groundout resulted in another run and then, after back-to-back walks, Jordan Harrison-Dudley drove in a run on a fielder's choice. CU batted around when Haynes walked with the bases loaded, making it 15-7, but SEU was finally able to record the 27th out to end the game.

Ohman, Clem, and Sanchez each had two hits for a CU team that totaled nine in the contest. Haynes drove in a trio of runs and was 1-3 while Clem led CU with a pair of scored runs. The Aggies stranded 10 runners on base.

Cameron will look to event up and then take the series lead on Saturday as the two teams meet for a seven-inning doubleheader at McCord Field with game one starting at 1 p.m.
